Montague Island Nature Reserve is a small island located on the far south coast of New South Wales, a short boat ride from the picturesque seaside township of Narooma. Originally just the location of a lighthouse, today the island is a very special place and home to 12,000 Little Penguins, thousands of Sheawaters and up to 2,000 Australian and New Zealand Fur Seals. During the whale migration season in June - July and September - November humpback whale sightings are frequent. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service manages this award winning nature reserve. Visitor access is by ranger guided half day tour or overnight conservation tours.

We started out at 1 pm. getting out to the island. Along the way some spotted dolphins took a ride along our bow as we were approaching the island. Once we reached it, we headed up the hill encountering shearwaters, seagulls and even caught a glimpse of a penguin chick in a nest box. We went up to the lighthouse... More

A delightful little island off the coast of Narooma where nature and wildife are abundant. The island guided tours are a must, very informative filled with lots of historical facts and wildlife information and the climb to the top of the historic lighthouse is worth the amazing 360 degree views!!

Visited Montague Island recently with Narooma Charters. Just a short boat trip from the stunning Narooma Harbour you arrive on the island to be met by a National Parks and Wildlife Service guide who shows you around. Our guide was Mark; he was brilliant. Very friendly and laid back and knowledgeable about many different aspects of the island. The view... More

Nobody ran boat trips on the island as they could not get 4 extra passengers. Access to Westpac ATM is closed after 6pm in Narooma Plaza. Pasta in the town costs $32.

Our tour with Kel from NPWS was absolutely fantastic. He is a font of knowledge and we learnt not only about the island itself, but also its Aboriginal, military and naval history. It was so good to see the amount of effort bring put into the conservation of the Island and its native animals and flora too.

The view from the top of the island is stunning, offers a great vantage point to scan the coast line along Narooma region. The rangers are passionate and knowledgeable, make the tour educational and worthwhile. The 200 metre climb from the wharf to the lighthouse can be difficult for people with trouble walking. Make sure you also book a snorkel... More

But the high light of the trip was the snorkelling with the Australian and NZ fur seals . The more screams our girls produced the more engaged... More

We participated in a conservation tour with the kids. It was 3 days and 2 nights and the Keeper's House. The house was incredibly clean and comfortable. The kitchen was fully equipped. To be on this special island for a couple of days was a once in lifetime experience. We saw whales migrating, fur seals playing, and a penguin walk.... More

Three children, ten grandchildren and two grandparents occupying a 3BR and a 5BR home next to the lighthouse. Built in 1881 but fully renovated, the accommodation is fabulous. A NSW NP&WS ranger on call for any problems, needs, questions, etc. Expensive but a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Beautiful.

It dominates the eastern horizon covering an area of 80 hectares made up of volcanic stone, one end black basalt, the other end, smooth, grey-brown granite. We took a tour to include an off-shore adventure to merge nicely with the heritage and culture. Its the largest inshore island on New South Wales coast and our tour gave us a window... More
