Polluted water and littered sand. To catch the ferry is the only reason you would want to go here. And the fish are practically inedible. "For fish caught east of the Sydney Harbour Bridge generally no more than 150 grams per month should be consumed."

River has brownish hue. Lots of floating rubbish carried by waters that should have been a jewel of Western Sydney

We have taken the ferry several times and travelled along Parramatta River all the way to Circular Quay, the centre of Sydney, We have also travelled to many other parts along the river. Taking the ferry is a very pleasant way to travel! The scenery along the way can be quite spectacular. The river itself is not the cleanest of rivers, though. Some of the highlights to visit are Sydney Olympic Park, Parramatta, Cockatoo Island and many others.

Visited on Tuesday 12th November. We took a ferry from Circular Quay to Parramatta and this is definately the best way to see and enjoy the Parramatta River.

A relative suggested a ferry up the parramatta river as a good activity while in Sydney. It takes over an hour to get from
Barangaroo to Parramatta and frankly that was about 45 minutes too long! Once past Drummoyne there are diminishing returns on the scenery. Instead I would recommend a trip across to Cremorne point for a lovely walk around Mosman Bay. Or a visit to Cockatoo Island for a touch of history and views over the water.

Using our Opal Cards, we boarded the Rivercat at Circular Quay and spent 90 minutes traveling along the Parramatta River to the wharf at Phillip St, Parramatta.
The seating inside the ferry was comfortable - many more seats available than appeared looking at the size of the Rivercat. Each Rivercat is named after a famous Olympian, with information inside the cabin about the person.
As well as being an interesting tourist trip, this is also a commuter ferry, taking people from Sydney to suburbs not easily accessed by direct public transport.
There were many stops along the way - a pamphlet with a brief history of each stop would have added to our enjoyment - if this was available, we did not notice it.
Points of interest along the way - Cockatoo Island's buildings and tents; houses in the older suburbs giving way to shiny new developments with 'river views'; unusual buildings by the water's edge that needed to be Googled for extra information; the variety of bridges we passed under, re their shape and construction; the mangroves along the last stretch of the trip, taking one back to how it must have looked originally.
When we alighted at Parramatta Wharf, there were cafes nearby. The options then were the free shuttle bus back to near Parramatta Station, a walk along Church Street to the station or a detour for a stroll through Parramatta Park.
A leisurely trip along an historic river in the Sydney area.

Catching the Rivercat, a low wash catamaran-ferry from Parramatta to the city along the river is excitement personified.. Forget traffic while you sit back and revel at the scenery on the 90 min trip to Circular Quay.
Along the way we spotted a variety of riverscapes, mangroves, near Rydelmere, people picnicking at Kissing Point & Olympic Park. Bike riders racing along the cycleways. Fishing folk and oodles of pleasure boats.
The riverside architecture is varied and rich in historic heritage and a plethora of modern mansions. Approaching the city, the river winds and stunning vistas beckon. We pass under a few bridges and close to some islands, as the Sydney harbour Bridge comes into view. on our travel card, the Opal, we forked out a premium of $2.50 each.

By taking a ferry ride along the Parramatta River you not only get a spectacular one hour ride along a beautiful river but you get an insight into the history of Sydney. Past old industrial sites, Naval depots, ship building islands and classic waterfront houses. Well worth the time, especially when its a nice day.

Had a lovely trip down the river from the old Olympic Park to Circular Key. Was really peaceful and relaxing with stunning views along the river bank. Definitely recommend!

We took a leisurely long walk along the banks of the Parramatta river and watched the birds and other wildlife. Occasionally, a river cat ferry would pass by along the river. Previously, we took a leisurely ferry ride along the Parramatta river to Parramatta and it took slightly over an hour.
