The Rocks is the oldest part of Sydney. It is where the convicts were dropped off. There was no prison or jail. If they wanted to have shelter it was up to them to build it. Most of the really old stuff is gone but there are still a lot of buildings that were built for the shipping industry and... More

The Rocks area of Sydney has many things to see and do including the excellent weekend markets, great restaurants & bars like the Argyle, Mercantile Hotel for a bit of irish fun, the lowenrau for great german beer & meals, several fine dining restaurants as well with top harbour views. You can stroll around the old narrow streets and take... More

Great neighborhood but some parts are being gobbled up by developers who are flipping the houses for big bucks displacing the elderly residents. As a tourist, you might not notice this but you should be aware that the face of the rocks is changing.

The rocks has many a sight and things to do. This historical area of Sydney set next to the circular quay area of the harbour can keep you entertained for a full day. Take your time to walk around and view the older parts of Sydney whilst taking in some breathtaking views of the opera house and harbour bridge from... More

Interesting to wander around the old streets and buildings. Plenty to see and there's an open air market at weekends. Susannah Place Museum is particularly interesting

The Rocks has two tours, a free tour you can do on your own. Or a paid tour but you must visit The Rock museum to buy a tour which is by reservations & different time frames. Although this is supposed to be the historic part of the city, I found it like a "fake" area only for visitors. Didn't like it that much

The first place most people tell you to visit in Sydney is the historic Rocks district. And while a Saturday market or pub crawl can be enjoyable, it's certainly not a on my highlight reel. I enjoyed the walk, which at times was very hilly, and the scenery and views of the harbor and bridge are great. Just not my... More

Staying in The Rocks

Neighbourhood Profile
The Rocks
The first residents of the Rocks were convicts and sailors from the old nation. As the oldest neighbourhood in the city, the area's cobblestone streets host more than 100 heritage sites and buildings, including the oldest house in Sydney, Camden Cottage, which was built in 1816. Taste a “midi “ or a “schooner” of beer and dine “al fresco” on the waterfront at some of the oldest pubs in Sydney. The weekend markets at the Rocks are where you can find local artists' hand-made souvenirs, organic food and designer jewelry in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. To enjoy some of the best Australian and international contemporary art, the MCA museum is open every day and select evenings. At the end of a long day of sightseeing, be sure to save energy to dance the night away at the area's many late night entertainment venues.
