No trip to Sydney is complete without seeing an opera at the Sydney Opera House. Opera Australia performs at the Sydney Opera House January-April and July-November every year. Opera Australia also performs at Arts Centre Melbourne and on the Sydney Harbour stage. Most performances start at 7.30pm and run 2–3 hours with an interval. There is no dress code. English translations are projected above the stage for all operas sung in foreign languages. Selected operas in the season will also have Simplified Chinese translations (Carmen, La Traviata, Opera on Sydney Harbour and Aida).

My wife and I loved the experience of watching the opera outdoors in Sydney. It's a wonderful setting, with the opera house as a backdrop - and the production was technically very good: good cast, great orchestra, good staging and impressive effects (especially the snow!)...More

Fabulous experience, very enjoyable evening, truly one to remember. Blessed on this occasion by perfect warm dry weather. The venue is great, the production was lavish colourful and entertaining, and the only drawback was that compared to an intimate indoor staging it was difficult to...More

We flew down from Brisbane specially to see Puccini's "La Boheme" at the Handa Opera stage on Sydney Harbour. A truly wonderful production with powerful singing, great humour, fantastic technical effects including artificial snow, and fireworks. The cast was superb; Musetta was the "tart" supreme...More

By the Botanical Gardens and on the harbor, this restaurant overlooks the Opera House and Harbor Bridge. A magical place, very romantic. Food was excellent. The outdoor "theater" has a unique feel, between the weather and the view, we were in heaven. La Boehme was...More

La Boheme, Sydney Harbour. We'd come all the way from Hong Kong (on a family visit). Granted, we aren't VERY rich and therefore couldn't afford the VERY posh seats! However, for some weird reason we expected to be able to see the performance AND the...More
