It may not be one of the world’s great iconic bridges, of the likes of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Ponte Vecchio, and London’s Tower Bridge, but it is a local landmark in Brisbane, and a walk over it will afford you good views of the Brisbane city skyline.

It’s not quite as old as its more notable rival, the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Construction started in 1935, a few years after the Sydney Harbour Bridge was unveiled, and it sprang into operation in 1940. During its construction it was named the Jubilee Bridge in honour of the reigning monarch at the time, King George V, but on opening it was renamed the Storey Bridge after a notable local public servant, John Storey.

It’s an easy walk across the bridge, on designated pedestrian and cycle pathways on each side of the roadway. You’ll get a better view if you use the city side walkway. We walked from Kangaroo Point on the south side of the river, to the Howard Smith Wharves on the north side. It’s an easy walk from Kangaroo Point, taking us a very leisurely 40 minutes or so. Just beware of cyclists who also use the same path. it’s easily accessible and manageable for those using wheelchairs or mobility scooters.

The bridge really shines at night, when it’s beautifully illuminated in all its glory. Take an evening stroll along riverside boardwalk behind Eagle Street, and you’ll get some lovely views of the bridge! It’s all for free!

Sometimes we forget how amazing Brisbane really is. How things are built and come to life at night.

Tip: At Sunset aboard a City Hopper(free service) to enjoy the peaceful views of the river

During our visit to Brisbane, we saw a black and white photograph of the Story Bridge during the process of construction. It is a reminder of the role the bridge has long played in the life of the city. While it is not the most elegant of bridges, it has a sturdy, reliable look which attests to its long service of the city. The view of it is now somewhat spoilt by the addition of some hideously ugly apartment blocks nearby. However, it is still worth a look.

A very friendly pedestrian city . The river front and especially the South Bank walkway is full of interest . If you want a change from walking there are always bikes and scooters available at very reasonable prices.

Well, you can't really miss this bridge, which is an iconic feature and landmark of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. I stay in a hotel close by and walked down to the nice walkways by the river to get some good views of the total span of this bridge. Apparently, it is the longest cantilever bridge in Australia.

If I'd had more time in the city, I would have liked to walk across it, either conventionally at road level or make the climb (at a cost).

Opened in 1940 this is a must see/visit when in Brisbane. It is quite a long way from one end to the other but is is on a well maintained walkway and you can walk on either side. For those daring enough you can do the adventure climb, but that cost something over $120

We like exploring new areas by walking so we walked across. We got off the ferry at Holman st and it was a bit of a walk to get onto the bridge. Easier from the other side. It’s a very busy bridge- traffic noise and lots of bikes, scooters, walkers. At night the lights are pretty and best viewed by ferry or sitting at Howard smith wharves with a glass of wine.

We crossed it in a taxi and sailed under a few times with ferry services. Probably more impressive from the river with its cantilever construction and piers at each end although only was required at the North end as the structure could be anchored to the cliff face. The South end piers were challenging to construct to a depth of 40m below water levels and required the installation of caissons. A feat of construction in the late 1930's with an overall length of 777m and a height of 30m above water. It was Heritage listed in 1992 and included as a Queensland icon 2009 during the celebrations of Q150, the sesquicentenary of the Separation of Queensland from New South Wales in 1859

Everyone talks about the views from the Story Bridge, and rightly so as they are wonderful. But what we like dmost was looking AT the bridge, not looking FROM it. What I mean is, grab a seat at one of the Howard Smith Wharf bars and watch the sun go down behind the glass of the skyscrapers and the colours of the Story Bridge as it lights up in the twlight. It is just magnificent.

The story bridge has a long walkway, a lot of people walking, running and cycling. On the weekend evenings there are many people talking about this bit of beer, and I am the night view of the bridge. Not only is the bridge beautiful at night, the building is also beautiful in the river.
