I have been planning to see the famous Great Barrier Reef for quite a while. A friend of mine just came back from Australia in March, 2017. He went to Port Douglas and joined a local tour to see the Reef. He said he was very VERY disappointed because the Reef was essentially dead. Instead of seeing the beautiful, multi-colored reef, he found that the reef was grey, white, "bleached" and not worth seeing. Did he exaggerate? I fully understand that the Great Barrier Reef is "seriously ill" because of global warming. My question is: As a Canadian living in Ontario, I find the long distance and the long flight prohibitive and painful. If the Reef is so sick and essentially dead, should I bother to take the trip to Cairns or Port Douglas to see it?

Agree with the other answer. Reef Experience took us to fabulous diving/snorkelling locations and the colours and the fish, sea turtles, small sharks etc were awesome. Go and see the UNESCO World Heritage Great Barrier Reef... More
