- kpiddyBrisbane, Australia13,998 contributionsGreat exhibition hallWe thoroughly enjoyed our recent to HOTA to visit the Archibald 100 exhibition, the staff were all very helpful and available. The adjoining carpark though lacks signage and information, no directional arrows on the ground to indicate the exit, no instructions to register your car on arrival at the parking station equipment, no information that the first four hours are free but you must still register your car first even if you are not staying over four hours. Fortunately we asked a volunteer guide on our arrival at HOTA what the requirement was for the carpark and rushed back to register. Confusing carpark.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten September 13, 2023
- AllanJGJWellington, New Zealand4,211 contributionsOutstanding public facilityWhat an outstanding public facility this whole area is; a striking gallery building, a cinema complex (with sensible cafe), and attractive grounds complete with a lovely lake to walk around. As for the contents of the gallery itself, there were only two floors with exhibits when we visited which was a little disappointing. The most interesting was about women fashion designers on the Gold Coast in the 1960s. Some great photos.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 2, 2023
- Sarah PBrisbane, Australia172 contributionsGood but also DisappointingIt was somewhere were I thought would be good, a lovely looking building and hopefully something interesting to see. Yes, it's in a great location. A different perspective on the Gold Coast. The building is impressive and the exhibitions were interesting. The staff were friendly and helpful. The thing which let it down was the restaurant. There was no 'cafe' in the building so we thought we'd ask if we could have a drink in the restaurant. Well, it looked like we were speaking another language and 'looking down your nose' didn't even come close to it. Reluctantly we were told we could take a seat (which was in some corner, not looking out anywhere) and we could only stay for a drink for a limited time frame. I wasn't happy with any of this and walked out. There was a cafe onsite, near the Cinema and enjoyed our drinks overlooking the park area. I would only go back if there was an exceptional exhibit on and would certainly not waste my time on the restaurant. Such a shame.Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten December 14, 2023
- Juliana RPereira, Colombia6 contributionsI love this placeI went to see HOTA with my classmates. I found the works of art very interesting. There are guides that will explain and teach you about the Australian artists whose work is exhibited. It also has spaces to share a drinks or mealwith friends or to read and relax, it is a very quiet and peaceful place overlooking Chevron Island and the beautifully picturesque canals.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten March 3, 2024
- Solongo M1 contributionAmazing galleryMy name is Solongo. I’m from Mongolia.I came to Australia and saw an art gallery for the first time. It was really fascinating. The most interesting picture is the one that when viewed from 2 sides, 2 different behaviors were visible. That was amazing.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten March 3, 2024
- Trang H1 contributionHOTA ExhibitionsMy friends and I went to Hota last Wednesday morning. A very friendly tour guide introduced us to the exhibitions and explained the meaning behind some of the paintings and the artworks. I was really excited about the artwork that we can see from two directions, one has a normal face and one has a angry face. It means everybody has two faces, most of us always show a happy face to another people and hide our opposite face. Mia myotherapyVisited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten March 3, 2024
- Jeanie B142 contributionsDonna Marcus shines! When we visited HOTA last week we were welcomed and told a tour would be starting at 11am. The person leading the tour was very interesting and gave us insight into what motivated the various artists whose work was on display. The exhibition that impressed me was Donna Marcus' Radiate. The artist uses found objects, mainly form kitchens to create abstract artworks that reflect light or have lights behind the constructions. Many are geometric - spiralling out from the centre. The guide told us that as a child Donna Marcus family were involved in removing metal from ships that were decommissioned and they lived aboard while doing the work. Her pieces have multiple pot lids, sieves and other kitchen apparatus arranged to radiate from a central point. Discarded items have been given a new life in the form of these magnificent installations which encourage quiet reflection on the beauty of found objects symmetrically arranged to suggest a new life radiating from them. I look forward to the interactive Renaissance exhibition coming at the end of March which promises to give us a new perspective on the works of Michelangelo and other Renaissance artists through 3D projections/Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten March 3, 2024
- Jenny Z35 contributionsDinner and showThe theatre itself was very satisfactory. We went and seen the mouse trap on opening night. It was great staff were lovely. It was easy to get there. Easy to park. the only disappointing thing was the cafe we ate our meal in. It was a pre-book session in accordance with the theatre but our meal was not satisfactory at all. We had lamb rogan Josh and rice which didn’t taste like lamb at all. It tasted like stewed beef with only a few little pieces of potato and bland rice. The tiramisu for dessert was very underwhelming. I love my deserts and I have never left desert but I left this one.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten June 3, 2024
- Stephen UBli Bli, Australia658 contributionsExceptional staff host world class exhibitionWarm arrival experience and a fabulously curated Italian renaissance exhibition that bought a new moving perspective to the fantastic art we have seen in Florence,Milan, Rome and Paris. Post exhibit we were treated to a tour or the remaining exhibition by Jasmine and Kate who opened our eyes to the texture and beauty of this beautiful piece of architecture. This venue has the best staff we have encountered in a long time, so Congratulations! Also the most beautiful view of the hinterland and coast !Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten June 16, 2024

The exhibition was very well organised with very friendly and helpful staff. The exhibition was amazing with projected animated artwork and classical music to match the animation. Highly recommended to visit while the exhibition is still in the gallery.Visited July 2024Travelled with friendsWritten July 10, 2024

Our party of five, ranging from 14 to 87, loved every minute of this magical show at HOTA on the Gold Coast, Australia. Reminiscent of circus routines but so much more sophisticated, with elements of sculpture, theatre and comedy perfectly juxtaposed, it was a visual delight featuring a range of music from rap to classical that complemented each routine ... and not a word was needed.
Performed by husband and wife duo Seth Bloom and Christina Gelsone under the name the Acrobuffos, the New York production incorporated simple materials such as balloons, confetti and floaty fabric, movement and a barrage of fans to create an unforgettable experience. The section featuring two giant balloons was up there with skits from greats such as Charlie Chaplin, Abbott & Costello and Laurel & Hardy. Absolutely brilliant!

We managed to book tickets online for the opening weekend of the new gallery and the Solid Gold exhibition. It was busy but never felt too cramped.
The actual building and gallery space is a stunner. As suggested by staff, we started on the fifth floor with the outside deck and worked our way down through each gallery level. The fit out is beautiful but l can’t help thinking all the gorgeous dark woods and brass will wear badly with general public wear and tear.
It’s a concise collection of art, but there was still plenty to see. Other great things: super friendly and helpful staff, no charge to get in and a cute lil gift shop.
We combined our gallery time with the Bundall Farmers’ Market on the Sunday to tick two things off our list.

We visited HOTA while spending a few weeks on the Gold Coast. The HOTA building is visually interesting from the outside and a pleasure to walk through inside. The use of natural lighting and wood works really well and the exhibition spaces were generally spacious. The quality of the displayed artwork was acceptable with some creative photographic pieces, along with some really interesting contemporary installations. The gallery does a good job to showcase local art, which should be the raison d’être of a regional gallery, but there were also a few surprising pieces depicting the Springbrook area by Fred Williams and Albert Tucker. There were also a number of excellent indigenous works throughout including a wonderful display of Mimi spirit figures. There were two negatives: the parking areas are badly signposted; the traffic flow becomes clear once you drive around a bit but for first time visitors it is not obvious. And while the fifth floor bar looks good, with some spectacular views of the Surfers Paradise skyline and ocean, there was simply nothing of interest to eat and we passed up the opportunity for a drink. A good bar needs to have basic bar food - a cheese plate, a charcuterie board, gourmet nuts, sliders perhaps - and I think they are trying too hard to be creative leading to a limited and unappealing set of options. Judging by the number of folks who looked at the menu and walked off, we were not alone in this view. Overall though a very enjoyable afternoon.

I am so impressed with the New GC Art Centre, HOTA. The building is definitely a Work of Art in itself. The shape, materials and overall aesthetic look of the Building is a wonder. We were lucky enough to catch the Pop Masters from New York showing, it was a little expensive to see at $25 ticket with original Art Works from Warhol, Hirst, Haring, Donnelly etc. A few other normal/free exhibits were on different levels but I felt a lot of space wasn’t used. Would be great to see a local (up and coming) Artist section who could submit work by application. This could change ‘monthly’ to let New Artists show off their work? The Little Gift Shop was full of expected things to buy that most Galleries sell. Plenty of parking in the massive carpark. At the moment even though you need to put yr car rego number into the parking machine, there are no tickets or a boom gate for monitoring your time there(?). Easy walking distance to Gallery. Wheelchair access no problem.

HOTA refused to refund our UB40 concert tickets after they postponed the concert to a time when we were on holiday elsewhere.
Email notifying us of the postponement went into my spam folder, and the refund window was only 4 weeks from email date.
Shocking customer service and experience all round despite repeated explanations about why we didn't apply sooner for a refund.

Always love to visit a new cultural institution and was please I was able to make it to HOTA. Its not easy to find and they could do with some signage on the roadways to direct. Their website said there was limited parking but I visited on a Sunday with a new exhibition and it was fine.
I was particularly excited to visit the Pop Masters exhibition the showing of a private collector featuring Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and KAWS.
Nice shop with interesting things and was inclined to buy... person serving me could have worked on her customer service skills. I had to ask for my receipt and a bag. 10c for a bag, why bother. Make it $1 and say it goes back to the collection.
Looked like a nice restaurant but went up to Level 5 for lunch. Amazing view of the Gold Coast. Had the prawns in lettuce and the Cesar Salad, all top notch.

The HoTA is free.
4 hr free parking
Free entry (except for one exhibition) everything else was free to explore and enjoy.
A great asset to the arts and community of the Gold Coast it’s worth exploring on a rainy day for something to do.

What a joy HOTA is. On a sunny day the building's colours shine out and you should go for a walk around the little adjacent lake to see it as well as some interesting sculpture and lovely tropical plantings. There are stunning views everywhere, including inside the building, particularly from the bar on the 5th floor.
As for the building itself, it's superb, with some quality spaces for exhibiting the art. We particularly liked the wall of photos on Gold Coast history and the quite majestic 'The Rainforest' by William Robinson. Out visit was also made memorable by two chats with one of the docents, Karen, who was charming and more than happy to give us some time to talk about the gallery and it's art. A brilliant visit and we'd be no doubt be regulat attendees if we were residents rather than mere tourist. This whole complex is a credit to the people of the Gold Coast. Highly recommended.

Went to the rooftop bar with with 4 friends and had a table booked. Booking went well but the service was slow and the waiters having no interest in coming back to serve your table after your initial order. Pretty sure I am still waiting for an overpriced drink that never came that I was charged for. Great view, could be a good spot for a few afternoon sunset drinks if they got it right

Wow, what a great experience. We saw a wonderful musical at the HOTA Performing Arts theatre, Come from away, and enjoyed some lovely wine before and during. There were a couple of very funny performers presenting pre-show entertainment in the forecourt area around the cafe which was fun. The people working there were all very friendly, the theatre was excellent with great facilities. They have movies as well as stage entertainment. We did not have time to visit the amazing fine arts building but will remedy that next time.
The HOTA Farmer's Market on Sunday morning was brill! Lots of fresh food, great coffee, more entertainment, food stalls with ready-to-eat meals, and artisan market stalls. One pie shop had a curried prawn pie that was to die for. The pasty was spot on, the creamy curry filling divine and the prawns (locally caught) were incredibly tender and flavoursome. Best pie ever.
HOTA has a picnic area with a lagoon, the whole area great for kids. Loads of parking. We will be back.
