Disappointed to say the least. The only reason you should come to the island is if you’re staying in the resort. The walking routes are lovely going though the forest. However, the beaches are pretty poor with little to no sand making it impossible to have a relaxing day by the beach. If you do brave it in the water you’ll find very poor visibility for snorkelling and if you do see something chances are it will be a jellyfish.
I wouldn’t recommend coming here at all and $95.00 for a return ferry is a criminal price.

Beautiful Island, walks to the lighthouse and summit are very challenging but worth it. Make sure you take sensible shoes and plenty of water and sunscreen. Summit views are breath taking. Walk to Nudey beach is much easier but still a scramble proper shoes are advisable.
Get advice from the boat operators about tides to discover the best time to snorkel it will change each day it’s advisable to avoid low tides to protect the coral from damage.

The pictures you see online are absolutely breathtaking, although they fail to tell you it is not beautiful soft sand it is hard dead coral. Very hard to walk, sit or lay on. We were unable to hire shoes for the day, purchase only.
We did a bit of snorkelling, it was ok , but we must've been in the wrong spot as we didn't see much. The restaurant was good, great quick service and cocktails were great.

Always love staying here, very relaxing and staff are always more than helpful. You have the choice of eating in the restaurant or over at the bar cafe. All the food is delicious and the cocktails. The best view from up at the lookout, but be sure to take plenty of water for the hike up and back.

If I could put no rating I would - not welcoming to those on day trips what so ever! Unable to use the toilets without purchasing a day pass.
Basically dumped on the island without any guidance or direction as to where things are or how to get our snorkel equipment.
Nudey beach is stunning but is a very rocky walk - the moderate walk is definitely an enclosed shoe walk with some climbing needed for small children.
Elderly and very young will struggle with this walk!
Staff not welcoming or friendly in anyway!!
Island itself has some beautiful swimming/snorkling locations but very hard on the feet due to washed up coral

….OVERPRICED, UNDERMAINTAINED AND LACKING IN FACILITIES
Note my rating and heading refers to THE CAMPGROUND. Overall I would rate the island 4 roundels - ABOVE AVERAGE.
Unfortunately few of my campground complaints after my 2016 stay had been rectified. Some aspects had actually deteriorated.
There is still no camp kitchen, no clothes washing facilities, no hot showers. The place is usually filthy at day’s end because facilities are over-run by day-trippers and resort guests. It needs a second cleaning.
Pricing is toward the top of the camp-area range – slightly dearer than the markedly superior and fully featured ELLIS BEACH CAMPING about 25km north of CAIRNS where I stayed a few days later.
IMPROVEMENT: there is now a long clothes line strung under the awning of the facilities block – probably by a local frequent-camper judging by its makeshift appearance.
DETERIORATION: there is now one fewer gas bbq and one fewer wash up sink. And I’m sure there was hot water to the sinks in 2016 – not in 2022.
I talked to the resort owner about these problems. The camp area is owned by CAIRNS CITY COUNCIL and run by the resort. He said the main problem was the council’s reluctance to put money into the place. Maybe so. Or maybe there is some pass the parcel here.
Otherwise the camping area is pretty nice - a smallish area with room for a couple dozen tents cut into the rainforest alongside the beach abt 250m west of arrival. There are plenty of flat areas and shade from vegetation (I noticed whoever clears branches that could fall had been diligent). There are a couple of picnic shelters in the south east corner.
The rest of the island is likewise pretty good – no shortage of beach areas and places to snorkel (probability of spotting a turtle high), some good walking tracks fitness and scenic-wise, the resort looks good, FOXY’S bar-bistro has fair value food/drinks and a scenic outlook over the bay, the small shop stocks a surprising range of stuff at prices not over the top, and in general the island offers enough to keep a day-tripper going all day, something GREEN ISLAND can’t.
And GREEN ISLAND has no camping area. I just wish FITZROY’s had more facilities and maintenance.
NB – some reviews below are critical of shallow water when SNORKELLING. You must be prepared to find a section of beach with deeper water. Best snorkelling is at the far (western/camping) end of the main beach around the white rock and just west of NUDEY. Deeper water is there any tide. It does get very shallow in the middle of the main beach.

Would not recommend as you cannot swim there freely. Thick coral beaches and difficult to snorkel in shallow waters so it's not good for kids. Make sure you know the swimming conditions before you make the trip as the beaches are not very nice. Good views of course but the island is overrated.

We planned our trip to Cairns (08 August)knowing it was low tide. However I wasn’t prepared to be so disappointed on our day trip to Fitzroy Island. No where does it say ‘snorkelling subject to tides and may be impossible’. Even the hire shop was happy to rent snorkelling equipment when they must have known it was impossible to get into the water far enough to swim or float with the reef virtually at waters edge. Everyone was struggling to walk in the water, trying to avoid obstacles and damage the reef and themselves. Gave up and spent the rest of the time and quite a few $ at Foxey’s with the hoards. Shout out to Quickcoast ferry transfer. Lovely newer boat (than the Flyer) and knowledgeable, fun captain.
Glad others enjoyed it, for us timing was the issue.

We had an amazing day on Fitzroy Island !!
We weren’t prepared for the walk to Nudey Beach, but we did it and survived !! It’s not a long walk, but it does involve a lot of rock steps, tree roots and hilly sections. It is absolutely worth the trek- just make sure you have a backpack for your snorkel gear !
The coral around the point is stunning, big walls of it right off the beach, it drops off very quickly and is beautiful- make sure you dive down around it and explore the lower corals and marine life. It’s stunning.

Will we be able to snorkel the first week in November, or will the stingers be too bad?

How likely are crocodiles in the water? Has anyone heard of one being on the beach here?
FarAway786205

The water is very clear around Fitzroy Is, not normal habitat for crocs as they like the swampy areas. Never known crocs to be sighted at this location. You can always check with staff at the resort when you arrive at the Island.

Do we need to book the Fitzroy island tour in advance for early Aug? If so, a few days or months in advance will do?
FarAway786205

Hi ! August is in nice time to visit. May to Sept is the busy tourist season. No need to book Months in advance. I advise you check out the weather on arrival and book your tour a few days in advance. The tour company is Great Adventures and if you book another tour they give 10% discount. If you are an outdoors type, they run Canyoning Tours at 2 great locations as well as Reef trips. I have not been on the Canyoning tours but often swim / hike in the gorges around these locations. Safe travels and I hope you enjoy kayaking at Fitzroy Is.

Is it possible to swim near the beach without a stinger suit in late November?

There is some risk in doing that. You may want to contact the local travel providers for a more definitive answer.

Maybe you could contact one of the caravan parks. I would imagine they should be able to find you a store area.

When you travel from Cairns to Fitzroy Island, do the sea get too rough and toss the ferry, making you fall over and break your bones?
katejim1
Boonah, Australia432 contributions
The sea does not get too rough, and if you stay seated as they request you can't fall over. Regulations would dictate that they would not go if the weather was unsuitable. Australia is very safety conscious.

Does this tour go to Fitzroy in April & year round, snorkeling?? Is there a pick up at hotel and drop off?
Lyn S
Nerang, Australia595 contributions
The ferry to the Island goes all year round. April is a good time- no jelly fish. You can hire equipment on the Island. They have glass bottom boat tours. Not a huge lot of coral left but still nice. Saw a few tropical fish. The turtle rehabilitation tour was very interesting. The National Park Lighthouse walk is quite steep but take your time and worth the effort. Other walks are easy.
