Interesting to learn about the history of this site, but what brings it alive is the daily re-enactment of "Her Story" performed by two actors, with visitors taking part. Very moving and a must.

The Female Factory was an Awesome experience into the way the women convicts lived in prison under very hard conditions. From the onset we were told; "You will not speak in this yard, unless you are SPOKEN to". It was enough to set the scene for what was to follow- The historical story of 'Mary Jane' and the hardships she endured.... More

This was another highly interesting insight into the convict history of Australia, the female corollary to the men's prison at Port Arthur, which we also visited. If you do decide to go, plan 2+ hours. It is absolutely necessary to attend the living history play and take a tour. There isn't much left of the original sight, and if you... More

As part of our City Tram Tour we visited the Female Factory, its mainly all gone now but they have managed to retain 5 yards which have plaques on the walls giving some insight into the crimes committed and ages and appearance of the prisoners. They have an lookout which contains the Blue Prints showing were everything was located which is... More

One of the highlights of my trip to Hobart. Fascinating history brought to life by our guide Ester. Thought about it for days afterwards.

After being recommended this site to visit we decided why not! So glad that we did take the time to walk around and see and read the stories of the poor women who existed in this place. We took the self tour but would recommend the one given by the enthusiastic volunteer tour guides as we came in earshot of... More

I did both the Heritage tour and the Her Story tour. They were both outstanding. You won't get much out of the visit without doing the tours. The acting in the Her Story tour was brilliant. Well worth buying a combination ticket

We first visited this site when it had just opened to the public and was not fully developed. Returning, we were impressed by the way they have improved the expereicne for visitors. There is a performance if you wish to take part, or you can just wander the site. It's all clearly marked and the Matron's cottage is very interesting.... More

I stumbled upon this attraction and am so glad I did. I had no idea on the history of the female convicts to Tasmania, and what a harrowing tale it is. I did the guided tour and it was excellent, the tour guide had an in-depth knowledge on the history of the site, the females that were incarcerated and their... More
