This is a fantastic museum of women's history - highly recommended. Informative and entertaining tour guide. Little known stories hidden away from Hobart's history books until the 2000s.

The review dots need a spot between 3 and 4, Average and Very Good. The Female Factory is worth a visit if you are a history buff. We enjoyed it but would have been better if we had allowed more time and joined a tour. It's always better getting 'behind the scene' news. That said, there is a lot of... More

Even though there's hardly any of the original internal structure left, the powerful reenactment by the theatre duo put us into a kind of invisible space in which we could feel how it was to be incarcerated here at the time. The cold, the solitary cells, the work of breaking up old ropes with broken hands, the idea of the... More

We went there mainly to find a female ancestor, and did so.The site and the stories are enough to make you appreciate how strong and resiliant our female convicts were, and how lucky we all are who are descended from them. The scale of the place is mind boggling, and talking to the volunteer staff was really interesting.Bits of the site are slowly being... Her Story is a powerful, emotional and important re-living of Mary's life as a prisoner in the Female Factory. Our visit to the site came to life when we participated and journeyed through her daily toil. I highly recommend it for people of all ages. It is a tremendous way for families to bring this part of our history to... More

Highly recommended to learn about the female convicts is Aust. As parts of the site have been demolished the best way to learn about the prison that these women were kept in is to go on the tour. It is very affordable and my 13 year old daughter said that it was fascinating so it is definitely appropriate for kids.... More

I'm ashamed to admit that prior to our visit today I'd really only thought about the male convict story. While I always knew there were a large number of female convicts sent to Australia I never took the time to learn their story. Today their plight was presented in a very interesting and thought-provoking way. Definitely do the guided tour... More

I spent time here as part of a bus tour and we didn't get the chance to do the guided tour through the site. Without someone guiding you around and giving you some context it's a bit hard to tell what the female factory would have been like when it was still standing as there's not really much info displayed... The answer is that one of the main tasks of the women was doing the laundry of free settlers and businesses. Yesterday we saw the play. Today my 10 year old granddaughter and I went back to do the tour. Our guide gave us an exceptional tour. Her knowledge of the female convict system is outstanding. It is wonderful to... More

A fantastic, authentic and informative tour - even on a drizzly winter day! The actors were wonderful and took the time to interact with the audience at the end, as well as answer questions. I'm Tasmanian and disappointed that we don't hear of this experience often.
