This is a must see when you visit Hobart. The museum is housed in an old bond store is worth the visit just to see this building. The museum gives a very good exhibition on local history. The art gallery is amazing especially the Tempest exhibition. The old and new architecture has been joined to create a beautiful gallery.

Visitors to Hobart should visit the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery as it provides a very good opportunity to appreciate local history, culture and art in one go. Entry is free and one can spend a few hours browsing through the exhibits. I spent just over an hour given time constraints but still got a good feel for the place... More

The Tempest exhibition was stunning and allowed TMAG to show some of the collection not usually on show. This is a hidden gem of Hobart that doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

Free entry and interesting exhibits. Nice cafe with good coffee on site too. History of Tasmania invasion and settlement exhibition is confronting but a history we shouldn't hide or forget. Highly recommended.

The section relating to the history of Tasmania from original inhabitants to the present day is very sensitively handled and the art collections are superb

This attraction is free, and very well maintained. I spent many days of my childhood in here, and recently returned after a 20year break. To say it only gets better with age is an understatement!

We enjoyed all aspects of this museum. I thought the historical section of the museum was much more informative than Port Arthur. They had a nice section on Tasmanian and Australian animals. There were several activities geared for children. It is easy to spend 2-3 hours wandering around. They also have a nice little cafe.
