The Theatre Royal opened in 1837, with major additions in 1850 and 1890, and remains a living centre for the performing arts. It presents live theatre, contemporary music, dance and entertainment. Dubbed by Noel Coward "a dream of a theatre", the Theatre Royal is Australia's oldest working theatre and one of its most beautiful treasures.

If you get a chance to book a show its well worth the visit. The theatre in itself is worth the visit. Magnificently renovated, a Hobart icon.

You can feel the history the minute you walk into this theatre, like stepping back in history. There are meant to be ghosts there! Great dress circle and the gods are the nosebleed seats up the top. There is a nice pub next door called...More

This is a gracious old dame of a building with its rococo details and quirky sight lines. Be prepared to crane around a post if you book a seat with a 'compromised view' of the stage. The seats in the dress circle are comfy but...More

We were up in the gods. Wooden bench seats that weren't super comfortable but they were cheaper. It was also a bit too warm and muggy up there. Beautiful stage and theatre.

We have been here many times over the years to a variety of shows and performances. The theatre is only small but very ornate with good seating and views of the stage.

I went and joint the tour when my friend and I visited Hobart. I was doubt when my friend showed me the place. I stood in front of the door, and thought it was just a small unattractive theater. But I was wrong. The theater...More

The Theatre Royal in Hobart is famous and many famous actors have performed here over its lifetime. It is a small intimate theatre with a magnificent chandelier. When visiting Hobart attending a performance here should be one of your must dos.
