About
The Royal Arcade is a charming heritage shopping arcade in the heart of Melbourne's CBD. The Royal Arcade was proudly the first arcade in Melbourne and is the longest-standing arcade in Australia. Originally designed by Charles Webb and constructed in 1869, the arcade has high glass roof and windowed stores. At the south end, the arcade features effigies of mythical figures Gog and Magog and a clock that chimes each hour. The arcade connects Little Collins Street to the Bourke Street Mall, with a perpendicular passage running to Elizabeth Street in the west. The Royal Arcade is much loved by locals and tourists and is an icon of the city. It is recognised on the Victorian Heritage Register and Melbourne's Golden Mile heritage walk runs through the arcade. The Royal Arcade is famous for its boutique fashion stores as well as specialty stores such as Spellbox where you can have your fortune read, Little royal Macarons and Babushka Russian dolls. The Royal Arcade houses an eclectic mix of unique stores with something to suite all tastes.

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

- The Wandering ReviewerMelbourne, Australia9,804 contributionsStunning Melbourne heritage architectureThe Royal Arcade has always been one of my favourite arcades in Melbourne. It was also the first arcade in Melbourne. “Its historical significance is profound and underpinned by the fact that, as a significant Victorian era building, it is part of the Victorian Heritage Register. The beauty of the Royal Arcade is it remains largely unchanged today, yet its Renaissance Revival style is in pristine condition.” (quoted from the their website) I find the filtered light and gentle buzz of visitors endearing. The architecture is unique and a fine example of Melbourne 100 years ago. It’s just a shame that there are so many shops available for lease. Clearly Covid has hit the arcade hard. But some of the old timers are still holding in there and keeping their doors open. This arcade holds many memories for me, visiting with my grandma and feeling we were “special” because the shops were “so fancy”. These days I walk the arcade with nostalgia and hope that it’ll return to its days of glory.Visited December 2022Travelled soloWritten December 17, 2022

It is right off Bourke Street Mall and won't take you too long to explore, but definitely worth it. Koko Black in the arcade is also a good place to linger a bit longer and have a great hot chocolate.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 26, 2023

Such an evocative and historic arcade, love Gog and Magog overseeing it all, and the shops within are very stylish, including the bakery which we visited as part of our foodie walking tour

Small arcade. Average experience and perhaps nothing really interested us, we covered the whole arcade in 15mins. Not a must to visit in my opinion.

Historic Royal Arcade runs off the Bourke St Mall, in central Melbourne. The retail outlets are interesting and have undergone a revival since the abatement of the Covid epidemic. The main feature is the Gog and Magog statues, which are replicas of those found in London. The pair are said to be giants, from ancient Britain. Royal Arcade is worth a short detour if you are in Bourke St, Melbourne's pre-eminent retail strip.
