Must book online in advance. This collection is in a residential neighborhood so the address cannot be published. Instead, a shuttle van picked us up from a nearby hotel and drove a very short distance to the residence. The shuttle driver was friendly and punctual. My husband and I were the only ones on the tour on a Thursday, which... More

I was looking something and unique thing to do in Melbourne, when I found this on Atlas Obscura. I love Georgian and Regency antiques so that was really cool, unfortunately the Christmas tour was not about the antiques in the house. Rather it was tour about artists, mostly local, that were inspired by the collection. I found it really interesting,... More

It is a bit of difiicult to categorise the Johnston Collection - it may be described as a 'gallery' or a 'museum' or an 'artist's space' - whatever description is given to it, it is fantastic. The house is devoted to displaying an eclectic antique collection, and is also available to various artists to create their own impression of the... More

I had tried to visit the Johnston Collection for several years through the ballot run by Open House but was never successful. When I saw an advertisement offering a tour of the new Christmas Show 2016, I jumped at the chance and booked my ticket on-line. As another poster has said, the Trust is very specific about the arrival at... More

My visit to the collection was disappointing. I was looking forward to seeing the house and the collection but the special exhibition did not fulfil expectations. Many of the interesting features of the collection were shrouded in cloth and the light was so low that it was often difficult to see what the guide as talking about. The guide was... More

Dear Stephanie, Thanks for your feedback and we were sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your recent tour of The Johnston Collection. The Johnston Collection is no ordinary house-museum. We offer three different interpretations of William Johnston’s collection throughout the year. Each presents his collection in a fresh way – engaging new and diverse audiences as well as... More

Last week I visited for the first time this remarkable house and museum. The collection was assembled by William Johnston (1911-1986) during the 1900's and then upon his death bequeathed to the State of Victoria under the stewardship of the National Trust. William Johnston was an antique dealer and collector with a shop in High St Armadale. In the course... More

Visitors should check how the collection is being presented. A visiting artist has created an installation and the house looks nothing like the photos on this site. I did see on the website that new room themes would be created but had no idea how much the installation would eclipse the collection. Very disappointing.

The Johnston Collection is a must see for those who love antiques and bygone times. This is the third time I have visited this collection and each times there is a special theme. The rooms contain a mix of interesting curious and quirky pieces with stories to tell. Mr Johnston's own story is fascinating and the legacy, he has left... More

Behind any Collection, there needs to be a story to bring things to life. Mr Johnston had his own fair share of quirks to fill a house full of Collections. The curators dress the house and collection with style; an ever changing style to provide new perspectives on the quixotic and quaint. The welcome from the delightful guides provides the... More

Just visited the Johnston Collection and thoroughly enjoyed it. Well worth seeing if you're interested in antiques , old houses and a bit of history. The personal guided tour made it come alive.
