- JAB134Adelaide, Australia28 contributionsA new perspective as a regular zoo visitorAs a regular visitor to the Zoo it was terrific to undertake the Wild Tales Walking Experience with Maurice as our guide for a different experience. We had a beautiful morning walk through the zoo and the animals were up and about. We particularly enjoyed seeing the pigmy hippo and the otters. Our tour included a breakfast and coffee which was a nice way to finish and we enjoyed it in front of the giraffe and zebra enclosure where the animals were active. It's good to get a different perspective and Maurice was very knowledgeable. We loved this tour and learnt new things. This would be suitable for families.Visited January 2023Written January 24, 2023

Visitors will love the native Australian animals. Some things that will interest everyone are Lion Gorge, and the Gorilla Rainforest. The elephant herd is expanding, the baby elephants are really cute. It's easy to spend a day at the Melbourne Zoo, kids love the Zoo. By the way, the Melbourne Zoo is close to the Melbourne CDB, it's easily accessible by tram, train or car.Visited January 2023Written February 10, 2023

Jake and Mia were superb guides who cared deeply and passionate about conservation. The experience was so special to see these beautiful animals up close. The Zoo itself was clean and tidy and the animals were well cared for. Easy access from the city via Tram 58Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten October 18, 2023
- Aussie_Tourist79Sydney, Australia605 contributionsBrilliant Zoo, easily spend all day hereWe have been to a lot of zoos and highly rate Melbourne zoo. We easily filled in the entire day. There were plenty of places to sit, get some food and take your time exploring the grounds and discovering the animals. Butterfly houses are always amazing and the zoo has a well balanced variety of animals so most of your group will be happy and see something they want. We enjoyed toi many of the exhibits to list them all here. The zoo was top class. We spent most of the day and skipped a few exhibits as we were tired. Allow to spend the whole day here as you easily will.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten November 14, 2023
- Jestaurant-reviewsWellington, New Zealand30 contributionsNew Zealanders at Melbourne Zoo!A group of 7 of us are in Melbourne visiting from NZ. We initially thought the zoo pricing was a bit expensive at $46 AUD for an adult ticket. However, we ended up spending 5.5hours there and enjoyed our time immensely. The layout of the zoo was fantastic, as was the cleanliness of the facilities and paths around each of the enclosures. The staff we saw were all friendly and the cafe where we had lunch had a good range of options. There were also lots of spaces to stop for water or eat if you wanted to bring a packed lunch. The animals were all well looked after and had large enclosures that looked really nice. Our favourites were the tigers, meerkats and elephants. All in all, would be an espeacially good place for young families and kids as there are lots of interactive areas and cool animals. Highly reccommend!Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten November 20, 2023
- AbbottHsuSerang, Indonesia790 contributionsOne day tourPretty good, designated and well organized layout inside. Visitors can easily find the way to see all kinds of animals. Since it is semi-open space, you can feel the natural and primitive atmosphere by searching those animals. Too be honest, it is not easy to see lots of animals in close distance. Kids are so happy to take a look at those creatures. A good opportunity to teach and interact with kids in zoo. You can spend half day inside to explore what you want. However, sometimes some animals may hide, sleep or go anywhere so that they are not available when you visit. For me and kids, it is a wonderful experience to visit this historical zoo. Easy to take Trams or Metro trains here. Enjoy.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten December 4, 2023

Very good set up with clear signage providing directions to the various exhibits. This was essential as it is a fairly large zoo with a wide variety of animals on show. As expected it was crowded but it didn’t detract too much from the experience. Access to the zoo was good as we used a tram to get there and back. Food and refreshments were available but were generally quick takeaways and we noticed that a lot of people took their own picnic baskets. We enjoyed the experience and would go again next time we are in Melbourne.

Too busy here, too many people. Lots of exhibits under construction/closed as well. There is plenty of parking at very inexpensive prices nearby. Other zoos are much better

My advice is to get there as the gates open, the animals are out & lots of animal noise & not many little people in your view. The feeding times/talks are worthwhile and are spaced out. Take your time & enjoy the atmosphere.

Cold wet day so many of the animals were hiding away from public view. Elephants were enjoyable.
Suggest visiting in summer. Has a wonderful array of animals which wold be great to see on a sunny day

We are taking a trip to Australia starting off in Sidney, any ideas of what to see in Australia. Places to stay and eat. Should we go to Melbourne? It’s at first time in Australia so we wanna make it special. Thanks

I would definitely recommend Melbourne. It has so much to see and do from 3 different zoos to theme parks, to going to the Australia Open in January if you are a tennis fan, to many different markets, galleries, museums and exhibitions.

When is the best time to arrive to avoid long queues as it’s school holidays now (Melb)?

Sorry about the late response.
I have never queued more than three-deep at the zoo.
Busy, would more likely happen when there is a night concert or event on.
School groups, during term would make for queues.

How do I get to the Zoo by public transport from Collins Street please?
B D
Melbourne, Australia21 contributions
Take the Tram from the corner of Collins Street and Elizabeth Street. towards North Coburg Route 19. Its about a 6 minute walk when you get off at Royal Parade/Parkville (through Walker St and Kendall Av, into Poplar Rd where the Zoo is...)
Alternatively, take the Upfield Line Train from Flinders St Station in the City. Get off at Royal Park Station, Parkville. Its a 7 minute walk through Upfield Bike Path into Poplar Rd).

Hello,
if I am going to the zoo with a group of students but would like to pack our own lunches, would there be any spot inside the zoo where you can sit in a group and have your lunch/ simple picnic?
We want to avoid eating in the restaurant to save cost.
thank you
