The Royal Exhibition Building is one of the world's oldest remaining exhibition pavilions. On 1 July 2004, it became the first building in Australia to achieve a World Heritage listing.

Located in Carlton Gardens, the pavilion was originally completed in 1880 for the first of two international fairs hosted by Melbourne. On May 1st, 1901, the initial Commonwealth Parliament was held here, an event commemorated in 2001, the centenary of Australian Federation.

Today, with its meticulously restored interior, expansive galleries and soaring dome, the Great Hall offers an impressive setting for trade shows, fairs and cultural and community events.

We wandered through the gardens on a very hot day. The architecture is striking, and the grounds were filled with picnickers and readers trying to beat the heat. A lovely refuge in the middle of the city.

Take a picnic to the grounds of the building and take in the views. The outside is so beautiful with the fountain and ponds etc! Such a relaxing place. I haven't been inside but I would love to. This is a stop on the free walking tour where you will learn a bit more about the history.

We only saw the outside - but it is impressive with its great dome and grandeur. Situated in a park that highlights its grandeur.

The Exhibition Building is gorgeous from the outside, with Carlton Gardens (a park) surrounding it. The area is worth a stroll, especially if you're interested in visiting the Melbourne Museum next door. You can only get inside if there is an event/show or if you pay to take a tour, which are available to book at the nearby Melbourne Museum.

We visited this building as part of a daily 14.00 tour. Very worthwhile and a fascinating building of its era. We were fortunate that there were no events in the building on the day of our visit which made it extra special. Overall a World Heritage Site which is undervalued and under promoted. Guides very knowledgeable and helpful

The pictures are so good, there you have the garden surrounding it is beautiful, it's a lovely stroll around there, and there's the water fountain there too. Just great walks and views. And it's free so visit it. We came here as a couple too it was very cute.
