The Royal Exhibition Building is one of the world's oldest remaining exhibition pavilions. On 1 July 2004, it became the first building in Australia to achieve a World Heritage listing.

Located in Carlton Gardens, the pavilion was originally completed in 1880 for the first of two international fairs hosted by Melbourne. On May 1st, 1901, the initial Commonwealth Parliament was held here, an event commemorated in 2001, the centenary of Australian Federation.

Today, with its meticulously restored interior, expansive galleries and soaring dome, the Great Hall offers an impressive setting for trade shows, fairs and cultural and community events.

We visited this building as part of a daily 14.00 tour. Very worthwhile and a fascinating building of its era. We were fortunate that there were no events in the building on the day of our visit which made it extra special. Overall a World Heritage Site which is undervalued and under promoted. Guides very knowledgeable and helpful

The pictures are so good, there you have the garden surrounding it is beautiful, it's a lovely stroll around there, and there's the water fountain there too. Just great walks and views. And it's free so visit it. We came here as a couple too it was very cute.

Take the City Circle Tram & do a short walk across the lovely Carlton Gardens to the Royal Exhibition Building. As far as I know, this is the only Grand building that displays the Gothic architecture of that time in such beautiful detail. I understand that it is one of the few remaining Exhibition Buildings from that era,

Away from skyscrapers, Carlton Gardens is a great place for photographers. The Royal Exhibition Building shared the same plot of land with the gardens, view is fantastic. Melbourne Museum is right beside Royal Exhibition Building, do drop by the museum too.

Even though we couldn't get inside due to an ongoing show, just walking around the grounds with the pretty fountains, flowers, and foliage was wonderful. The building itself has the beautiful Victorian Style. The area surrounding it is perfect to sit on the grass with a picnic, relax, and soak of the afternoon people watching. A nice oasis just NW...
