Perth's favourite playground, the Swan River is a stunning waterway which winds its way from the Darling Scarp to Fremantle. This natural attraction is popular location for Perth locals and visitors to enjoy a day out boating, fishing, skiing, paddling, swimming, picnicking or simply enjoying its vista.Rich in environmental and cultural values, the Swan River was named Derbal Yerrigan by the local Aboriginals who believe that the river was created by the rainbow serpent ‘Waugal’, a dreamtime spirit taking the form of a giant snake. It is believed that the Waugal created creeks, waterholes, lakes and valleys on its journey to the ocean.

Instead of building just over the river, like in Brisbane and Melbourne, Perth has broad green spaces on both sides of the river. This provides vistas, walking and various activities. There is a ferry from Elizabeth Quay but one can easily walk across one of the bridges. Recently there has been a major development in the Quay with has replaced... More

A big part of Perth so worth a walk. Quiet nice to see the city from far back out of the hustle and bustle.

There is an excellent ferry service form South Perth foreshore to Elizabeth quay. It take around 5 -7 minutes to cross and there is minimal waiting at the new ferry terminals. There are cafes at either end of the ferry. The view up and down the swan and the narrows bridge is breathtakingly beautiful

the Swan river is perhaps the bluest river in Australia, certainly far superior to Qld and Melbourne CBD efforts, it is unspoilt there is a nice 10km ride/walk circuit that takes in both sides of the river.

You can't visit Perth without seeing Swan River. It is so wide that it's impossible to miss. There are so many relaxing spots along it and plenty of viewpoints as well.

Great river in the heart of Perth with so much to do on its banks. We had a dog party on the side of the river, with paddle boarding under a free shelter with a table

First time visit to Perth. Found the Swan River area just beautiful. Lovely to look across to see areas either side - take a boat ride on the river or just walk beside it. Plenty of benches to stop, sit, breathe and enjoy on a loveky sunny day
