Perth's favourite playground, the Swan River is a stunning waterway which winds its way from the Darling Scarp to Fremantle. This natural attraction is popular location for Perth locals and visitors to enjoy a day out boating, fishing, skiing, paddling, swimming, picnicking or simply enjoying its vista.Rich in environmental and cultural values, the Swan River was named Derbal Yerrigan by the local Aboriginals who believe that the river was created by the rainbow serpent ‘Waugal’, a dreamtime spirit taking the form of a giant snake. It is believed that the Waugal created creeks, waterholes, lakes and valleys on its journey to the ocean.

So Wide!

You can't visit Perth without seeing Swan River. It is so wide that it's impossible to miss. There are so many relaxing spots along it and plenty of viewpoints as well.

Great river in the heart of Perth with so much to do on its banks. We had a dog party on the side of the river, with paddle boarding under a free shelter with a table

First time visit to Perth. Found the Swan River area just beautiful. Lovely to look across to see areas either side - take a boat ride on the river or just walk beside it. Plenty of benches to stop, sit, breathe and enjoy on a loveky sunny day

Easy parking, accessible by public transport and just serene watching the birds play on the foreshore. Great for families and for the solo traveller.

There is a black swan at the river which is a symbol of the city. Have the option to use Transperth ferry,Little Co Ferry, James Cook ferry or others to cruise the river. A scenic view can be viewed from the place.

Some parts of the Swan river are sacred to Aboriginals in the area because it is where the rainbow serpent travelled through. I have personally found my own special spot where the serpent is supposed to have exited the river, near the old Swan Brewery. There are shady sheoks, soft sand and plenty of river. I often take my wine... More

We sailed to Freemantle and back with Captain Cook cruises which we booked from the ticket office at Elizabeth Quay. We would thoroughly recommend this, the journey was enjoyable and informative and Freemantle is well worth a visit. An added bonus was the free wine tasting on the boat on the return sailing.

A lovely river that separates the big tall business district and the nice quaint area of south Perth. I walked from Elizabeth quay to Heirisson Island, over to Burswood Casino then all the way down to the Mends street jetty to get the boat back to Elizabeth quay. Amazing walk which lets you see Perth from a different point of... More
