The Auckland Art Gallery collection is small, but full of gems - I was surprised by the quality of the European collection. The Lindauer special exhibition was really good - I took the tour and learned a lot about the painter, his work, and NZ history in the 50 minutes

Housed in a lovely old building in the heart of the city this Art Gallery is small compared to the bigger cities but has some interesting artworks. We came primarily for the Lindauer exhibition (stunning portraiture) which was very impressive. He was a prolific artist so there are a large number of beautiful paintings many of which are of important... More

This impressive gallery housed in a striking building won 2013’s “Cultural World Building of the Year” and sits beside the original, built in 1888. It utilizes native Kauri trees at its entrance way and welcomes you with the Māori greeting "Nau mai haere mai". (Come, welcome!). It has NZ largest collection of art – 15,000 pieces. There is a permanent... More

Auckland Art Gallery (Toi o Tāmaki) is a "must visit" attraction in Auckland. The Art Gallery in centrally located near Auckland Central Business District (CBD) and entry is free. Auckland Art Gallery has a most fascinating display of Paintings - especially Paintings depicting New Zealand's Heritage and Maori Culture. It is most illuminating to learn the History of New Zealand... More

Not quite as well located as its chief competitor in Dunedin, but a wonderful building housing a great collection. Dunedin and Auckland argue about whose is best, but Auckland has nothing to be embarrassed about - at least in this regard. Get to the Lindauer show if you can it is really is good. Hard to believe how prolific he... More

This was a WONDERFUL way to spend a rainy afternoon in Auckland. It's FREE to the public (unless you want to see the special exhibition), and the art is just beautiful. There are even history lessons in this art gallery. Even the building is art, in my opinion. Well worth a look.

As an art lover, I always visit art museums and galleries when I visit different cities. I've been to the Louvre and the Met to name a few, so maybe my expectations are a little high. But I was a little underwhelmed by this gallery. The Maori Portrait Exhibit was wonderful, but the rest was a little lack-luster. Even with... More

Excellent exhibition at the Auckland Art Gallery. Staff were welcoming, friendly and informative. Could have spent way more time there as there was so much to see. Good little gallery shop to buy a few trinkets.

I enjoy art and art galleries, and try to visit one wherever I go. The Auckland Art Gallery is not one of the best, but it is still very enjoyable. A free admission which is not usual for New Zealand, so that was a plus. I did not feel there was that much in the museum, but there were some... More

There's a Lindauer exhibition on at the moment. He was early painter of Maoris (second only to Goldie). It was so interesting to see how he did his paintings. He traced a photo via some sort of magic lantern way onto canvas, then painted it.
