I found this to be interesting in the many aspects of travel covered. It is also interesting in the technology side and the part that New Zealand has played in world communications, probably resulting from its rather isolated location on the globe.

This mixture of early history, Steam, Aeroplanes, and re-created living and working accomodation well records the past. It will be interesting to see how they cope with future additions, from tye more modern past.

Had a boys trip to Auckland and decided to go here as all into mandshed type things. Its an amazing spot and a credit to the volunteers that help keep the place going. The air museum you get to on the tram is stunning. The TEAL Solent is a sight to behold! I'm not normally a gift shop person either... More

If you have young kids, this would be a good place to visit. They have lots of things for young kids to explore and experiment with. We happened to go there on motorcycle day, which was interesting, but not my thing.

The museum has a lot of interesting items spread out into many buildings. The free tram between 2 campuses of this museum is not mobility-scooter friendly, though if you have time you can use the scooter to get to the alternate camps.

Quite an experience, and one that the children must see. Not all of the displays and exhibitions turned out to be functioning or operational, but there was still more than enough fascinating things to discover: the mechanisms of yesteryear that explain the devices we have today, the machines and men behind the polar expedition of 60 years ago, the large... we had a fascinating day at the museum - the main site has some great steam engines and working teams. some of the collection could be more accessibly displayed - cars were in a shed you could only peer into from outside. There were a lot of school groups on the day we visited too. Definitely don't miss the collection... More

If you like things from the past then this is worth a day out. Cars, trains, planes and all things mechanical. For the aviation buffs there is a few special planes form the past especially the Lancaster bomber. I'm a bit bias as its one of my favourite aeroplanes, I was also asked several years ago to manufacture a new... More

Sometimes a museam just gets it right and the MOTAT is just a place. A vibrant mix of interactive displays and retro consumer electronics MOTAT has something for everyone I would say. Starting at technology and communications it takes you on the journey of computing and electronic games through to music and the humble mobile or not so mobile phone.... More
