The old market precinct has been replaced by an urban village - come and walk through the historically protected buildings and experience part of the Auckland heritage - grab a coffee from one of the cafes and wander the shops in this small urban village.

After years of development the precinct is just starting to come alive with a mix of artisan workshop stores, galleries and shops left from the old market that used to be on this site.

Restaurants and food outlets make this area popular with the locals who work and live in the immediate area.

The area that now makes up Victoria Park Village was once the local rubbish collection area. The horses would lead the carts around the old City Centre collecting the rubbish - the rubbish was then delivered to Victoria Park Village, burnt in the old chimney and the power generated from this would power the city street lights. On site you can still see the chimney, sorting area and the old stables. a ramp that was previously used to get the horses up to the second floor of the stables is now the Celebrity Walk where a number of icon Kiwis have left their hand and foot prints. The horses have long since "bolted" from the stables and in their place a thriving community of artisans are setting up in eateries, workshops, shops and galleries.

Very quiet today - empty shopfronts and the few open offering "clearance " prices - suggesting that they won't be open for long. I don't know what the developers have done wrong, however this space is sad. I walked from the ferry terminal, which was the best part of my morning.

Hi Penny Thank you for coming to visit us and I am sorry you visited us in a slow patch. We are almost at the end of an extensive refurbishment that has earthquake proofed the Village and will enable more stores and eateries to open soon. More eateries are due to open mid April with new stores opening all the... More

Very disappointing that this seems to have changed into a corporate office precinct. This used to be such a great part of Auckland for locals and tourists, however it was dead the day we were there and the few shops that were there was closed. There was one cafe open and that was it. Wasted effort to there by foot.... More

Yes with the changes in the area the whole precinct has changed from the bohemian feel of the 80's and 90's to a central city urban village complete with offices, eateries, bars, gym, pilates studio, galleries, workshops and retail stores. The precinct has been undergoing a refurb and unfortunately it does sound as though your visit was unfortunate timing. we... More

I had expected more and found just a few stores open, many without staff manning them....prices were high. There were some options to eat and drink.....but not worth the walk

Hi DJS1950 I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your visit - hopefully on your next visit the many changes that we are making at Victoria Park Village will be complete. Many of the old stores from the previous markets have vacated to make way for more eateries, galleries, workshops and some retail. It is true the... More

It's ruined, I remember it from years ago and now it is just a small block of shops, another concrete wonder, not worth the visit or even trying to find it. Terrible tourist shops, this is not a 'market'

Hi Mike You are absolutely right it is not a market and we are in the process of changing the name to Victoria Park Village. A cluster of galleries, workshops, shops, cafes, bars and restaurants now operate within the historic buildings that make up the precinct. Hopefully if you decide to visit us again you will have a more pleasurable... More

Nicely refurbished but no longer would I call this a market. Looks like rent is too high as hardly any shops occupied and no hussle and bussle of a market to be seen. Disappointing

Hi Ricroch22 You are absolutely right it is not a market and the name is being changed to Victoria Park Village. Since your visit in November some of the new stores have started moving in and we have a new cafe opening in April along with a new Cocktail Bar and Whisky Bar. New shops are moving in all the... When you hear of a market set in an old refuse plant you conjour up a bustling place selling a variety of goods and produce. Well the Victoria market will need your imagination as this is none the above. Sure it's well converted and has a nice paved area to walk around with the chimney as a feature but as... More

Gone are the crowds, gone are the alleyways full of vibrant shops and music. One of the cultural centres of Auckland, accessible to all, has been reduced to a shadow of its former self...it's disappointing and more than a little sad, perhaps with the onset of time and mounting detritus this will once again be a viable cultural centre, but... Found info on this shopping area online, and it sounded wonderful - great re-use of the old garbage processing site. What a waste of half a precious day in Auckland. We walked in the rain/hail/sun from the gallery down to the general area, lack of signage was a big issue. When we found it only about 1/3 of the shops... More

I walked to this market expecting to see many shops and eateries and a bit of history. What I saw, was a huge building being constructed next door to the market which will have high end apartments or condos with a high end retail area. The market next door is dwarfed by this new complex. Inside the market are a... More
