Wouldn't recommend this beach. It's one of the regions most dangerous. Plenty other beautiful beaches I would go to first.

This is a classic west coast NZ beach. Black sand, dramatic coastline, expansive. A nice stream running out into the ocean that can get quite warm in patches during the summer - nice for kids to splash around in!

Beautiful view, even during winter. There are plenty of vineyards along the way from Auckland city where you could drop in for wine tasting.

The wildest, windiest beach I have ever breathed salt air on. The sheer beauty of the raging sea and the wind swept beach is romance personified. I sure wouldn't be swimming the day we visited but I'd sure return for another weather beaten walk with my dear Wife. An exhilarating and wild experience that I wouldn't trade for a sunny,... More

Well worth the drive from auckland. The burning sand on a summers day is worth the mad dash to the water. Swim between the flags

Came here today with my mum and sister, what a beautiful sunny day it was (considering we are nearing winter)! Unique black sand, a caravan cafe, lots of dunes, a nice long walk but not overwhelmingly so - easy enough, but the best part is the caves! As kids we used to come here often and I always enjoyed the... More

Not quite the breathtaking beauty of Piha beach, but well worth a visit. The black sand is quite unsettling, but also very beautiful.

Return visit after ten years. Delighted to find Trude and John still the most hospitable of hosts. Greatest view of sunsets in the world from the small cottage. A great place to mellow out and soothe the soul. Highly recommended.
