KiwiRail Scenic is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train network. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience not just a journey. The Northern Explorer between Auckland & Wellington is a unique journey through the heart of the North Island, through an array of changing landscapes of sea coasts, farmlands, river viaducts and the central volcanic plateau. The service operates a 6 day timetable, departing Auckland on Monday, Thursday and Saturday and Wellington on Tuesday, Friday & Sunday.

Wellington to Auckland by train on the Northern Explorer was a great trip. Left Wellington at 8am, bought some snacks at the super market at the station as wasn't sure what would be served. The buffet car had plenty of everything. Lunch with a couple...More

The train was delightful. passenger cars are a bit crowded, but if it's a good day that doesn't matter, as you will want to spend all your time in the outdoor viewing car. The scenery is amazing. You can see well inside as well --...More

Take this trip for the scenery which is excellent but if you are in a hurry to get from Auckland to Wellington don't take the train. The track frequently runs alongside the road and the cars overtake the train. The narrow gauge limits the speed...More

We use this service maybe once every year to stay with family in Auckland. Even when the weather isn't conducive to sightseeing, the trip itself is relaxing and the gps triggered commentary appeals to my interest in history along the way. With restless children, the...More

So lets’ get straight to the point. My reviews are usually long winded and full of myself so unless you want to read part two about the disastrous return trip on the bus, I will tell you straight up, that the train journey from Auckland...More

We travelled from Wellington to Auckland on a dreary day but the trip was still fantastic. We really enjoyed travelling the Rarimu Spiral and crossing some high viaducts. The windows are amazing and the commentary was just enough to keep us informed without being overbearing....More

Hi are there any cabins on board I would like to get to Wellington without any stopovers and im unsure of what a stop over is. Also if I pay for the cheapest fare it reads with no stopovers which actually suits me fine however if that is not to be do I have to wait any way if there are stopovers for other travellers?

Hi, we're looking to travel on the train from Wellington to Auckland but are unsure what we should do in terms of stops. Would people recommend staying on the train (from Wellington to Auckland) for the full trip or if not is there anywhere in particular that you would recommend stopping off at.
