Somes Island requires taking the Days Bay ferry which has infrequent crossings. That's the downside, so ensure you plan ahead and expect it to take most of the day. Once there it's an interesting enough wander around with its history as a quarantine stop but only needs an hour or two (but of course that's dictated by the ferry). The... More

Easily reached by ferry from downtown Wellington or Days Bay in the Hutt. Great walks, wildlife, WW2 installations, lighthouse. Very cool to stay overnight on then you can explore after dark for Giant Weta and Tuatara

I had a great day out exploring Matiu island. I had lovely weather - its quite exposed, with not much shelter, so keep an eye on the weather. Plenty of maintained trails and wildlife to look for.

Somes Island is a short ferry trip from Wellington Harbour. We caught the 10.00 ferry and the 12.50 return, time for a picnic and a walk around the Island. We saw over 50 Skinks as we walked along the easy walking paths and the views towards the harbour are stunning. We saw and heard many birds and even a Little... More

This is a beautiful little island with a lot of interesting history and wildlife. Take over your lunch or some snacks because there is no place on the island where you can by food or drinks. The island is closely linked to the history not only of Wellington but also to New Zealand. Take a walk around the island an... More

This is an island that transforms your view of Wellington and its famous harbour. The highlight is to come across totally natural the Tuatara, They are not behind any fence they jsut roan this island. They are however elusive but you get to spot one and be still you will see such an amazing dinosaur in real life. Kids just... More

Take the ferry over from Wellington wharf and visit Matiu/Somes Island, its a great day trip or even a morning or afternoon trip to just spend a couple of hours over there. The Island is predator-free which means that when you arrive, you are taken through a process of checking to see that you haven't brought anything that may be... More

Great day trip. Take the ferry from any of the many wharves around the harbour. Take a picnic, take in the scenery.

Catch the East/West ferry from Wellington or Days Bay with a picnic lunch and spend at least 4 hours exploring a bit of Wellington history, checking out the native birds that are living preditor free here. Excellent maps are available and excellent paths around the island. Great for all members of the family, pram friendly.
