While moderately small, Wellington's zoo is a funky and enjoyable visit on a pleasant day. There are a few highlights, such as the Nest (the vet clinic), the chimpanzee enclosure and the nocturnal house with its tuatara and kiwi. As a bonus, the cafe does good coffee, though the food selections are a little limited and over-salted for my tastes.... More

We visited Wellington Zoo for the cheetah encounter last week and it was an incredible experience. The zoo itself has some fantastic exhibits and really promotes education and conservation which is really what a modern zoo should be about. There are roving "rangers" available to answer any questions you might have and give you a greater level of interaction with... More

We booked the Red Panda Encounter on a rainy, cold weekday, and had an unreal time. We spent about 30-40mins in the enclosure, got to meet all 4 Red Pandas at the Zoo, and were allowed to hand feed and pat the animals. Our guide (whose name escapes me) gave us heaps of information, answered all our questions and had... More

We are locals who visit the zoo about twice a year to see what is happening there. The latest upgrade is lovely for families of younger children as there are lots of interactive things to do. It's a smaller zoo, a bit hilly. The kiwi enclosure has been significantly improved so that you have a chance of seeing one!. I... More

Zoos have fallen out of favour for many of the right reasons. Bored animals in tiny cages, poor animal husbandry, and so on. Wellington zoo is not like this at all. I just love the areas where you can get really close to the animals and the zoo is full of interactive exhibits. It has changed so much over the... More

I enjoyed my visit. Though I am against keeping animals in captivity, but the animals were in a good condition here. You could find a combination of native and non-native New Zealand animals there. The best part for me was where they show how they treat the animals. This is great for people with kids.

I have to say that the zoo is a place I have wanted to see for ages. I was however disappointed in the lack of animals. I guess I have been spoilt with Auckland zoo for years. I would not come back I don't think

I grew up in the Newtown area, visiting the zoo on a number of occasions in my youth. Today's visit was the first for several years. I have seen the transformation from a 'traditional' zoo to one in keeping with modern themes of conservation and sanctuary. In fact a number of the animals have been rescued from captivity and abuse... More
