    Its easier if you drive!
If you're going to do a lookout in Wellington, this is the one to do. Views over the harbour, the city, and across to the airport, make it worth the walk, ride or drive up there. Lots of photos to take!

A good morning walk to the local summit.
An excellent short walk/hike from the city centre to the lookout on top, this reserve appears to be a favourite with the local population for dog walking, walking and BMX bike riding. There are several trails, all clearly sign posted, ascending and descending the lookout, offering a good variety of scenery for the tourist - look out for a sign showing where scenes from The Hobbit was filmed! The lookout can also be reached by car (a nice car park for cars and buses) and a metro bus stop!

Definitely worth it, the view over all of Wellington is awesome
I hiked to the Mt Victoria lookout today and it is definitely worth a visit. The view is incredible no matter in which direction you look, it‘s really awesome. Additionally, there are several nice hiking tracks that you can use to get to the lookout rather than driving which I‘d definitely recommend, as the nature is incredible and there aren‘t many people so you can enjoy it on your own.

We visited this place on an afternnon with good clear weather. The view was panaromic as is to be expected from any high point overlooking a city. For us it was a short drive after visiting Museum of NZ Te Papa Tongarewa. It helped that we were able to drive up to the top. The more energetic ones could trek or bike up.

We drove up the windy road to this viewpoint over the city. It is a good place to become familiar with the layout of the city and to also watch planes taking off and landing at the nearby airport. There is also a large sail-shaped multi colored sculpture near the summit that is eye catching.

It is well worth walking up Mount Victoria though it is possible to drive up if the walk is too daunting. We walked up from Majoribanks Street. This is a lovely path through woodland for much of the ascent. The view from the lookout on Mount Victoria is stunning; you can see over the city and port in one direction and out to Cook Strait in the other direction.

A friend of mine says that on arrival in a new travel destination, your first morning should always be spent getting to a high spot to check out the view and to orient yourself….

The walk to the Mount Victoria lookout isn’t overly long (?30 mins each way) but it is steep. Recommend walking up Majoribanks Rd in the suburb of My Victoria (cute weatherboard houses stacked steeply along the hillside). You can return a different way that brings you out near Oriental Bay (great place for a dip in hood weather, so pack or bring swimmers).

The walk is shady for the most part, the lookout provides 360 degree views and well worth the effort.

Note: as far as I could tell, no toilets or drinking water at the top.

It is also possible to drive to the lookout

We did the walk up early in the morning and it was a great way to start the day with some exercise. The views all around from the top are fantastic. I would imagine it is also spectacular at sunset. A walk up to COS about 15 minutes.

We did the loop track from Marjorie Banks Street, to the summit of Mt Vic and came back out on Oriental Parade.
Lovely to be in the bush yet so close to town, plenty to climb and explore enroute. Beautiful views of the city at the top. (Also it’s possible to drive up if you don’t have time to walk, but totally recommend the walk)

There are some awesome views of Wellington to be had, on both the city and Evans Bay sides. Lots of walking tracks to get up there from sea level and good mountain biking too (the world mountain biking champs were held here a few years ago). It is something you should do if you are in Wellington.

My partner shirked at the thought of climbing Mt Wellington, so I went solo. But while the mountainside is often quite steep, the path is well-made, clearly marked and not slippery (at least when I was there). Basically, I thought it easier than it looks - I was up and down from the Majoribanks St entrance in an hour. Of course, from the top the views are spectacular - across the city and the surrounding waterways.
