This area is pristine despite there being a road along which you could drive or cycle. There is an unmanned information centre and toilets at the beginning of the walk. It is easy walking along the road to the red rocks. We didn't see any seals on the day we did the walk but it didn't matter.

Great walk from the visitor centre round to red rocks, easy going for all abilities, beautiful views across the Cook Strait and on a clear day you can see the south island. This is also one of the best places in Wellington to watch the sunset, its incredible, and if that wasn't enough there is often seals.

Just spent the afternoon at Red rocks / island Bay looking at the fur seals and it was great great fun for kids and patents. Scenic drive-in you have a 4wd that can be a little challenging ( we nearly got stuck ...). You can get so close to the seals...highly recommended and would do it with the walk in... More

Beautiful place and a must-do in your first trip to Wellington. The devil's gate provides great pictures :) Beware the weather, it's windy and a bit cold.

It was so windy when we visited we couldn't make it the whole way round, the sand whipping against skin was too much. Pretty spot though so if it was less windy it would have been nice.

Have done lots of walks out to this area, it's easy, rugged cliffs up one side, huge kelp on the other, and of course the wild life !!

From Island Bay this is a flat walk along the sea on a gravel track. With the sea along side and the hilly slopes of green bush opposite you can really feel totally away from the city and enjoy the calm of nature so close. If you are lucky you can watch the sea lions along the way otherwise just enjoy... I visit the South Coast of Wellington a lot. It's my go to place for trekking and getting into the wilderness. The walk out through Red Rocks Reserve is incredibly scenic and yes the rocks are red too! The weather can be very changeable, so be prepared, even though it's a short walk. On the way out, the sea on... More

Amazing walk along the beach which is a must do in Wellington. Insanely strong winds but worth visiting. You'll see fur seals, especially in winter and fascinating red rocks which look like from another planet.
