Canterbury Museum is a fairly average museum as you would expect to find in any city. Its free to get in. I think having just been to the museum in Dunedin I was disappointed with this one. It has a bird hall, a mummy and an Antarctic exhibition and information about the early Maori settlers. I very much enjoyed the... More

Canterbury Museum is one of the best museums I've visited. The displays are immaculate and comprehensive. There are a number of interactive exhibits which are entertaining. There was a temporary exhibition by Air New Zealand when I was there which was outstanding. There's lots of things for the kids. Like most museums, it's a bit of a maze, but we... More

An interesting place to visit especially if its a grey day. There's a very large shop with an array of touristy type goods to purchase. I think it was more or less a one way system through the museum. I liked the exhibit containing lots of shells inside a house.

Entry fee is a donation ($5 suggested) There is plenty to look at for adults and kids but I didn't see anything overly exciting. It is a good indoor activity for a cold day. Cafe is pretty good, with a nice outlook to the botanic gardens and there is a decent play area for small children to keep them busy... More

Certainly the most unexpected highlight of Christchurch visit. Seems underadvertised as we wandered in by chance and had to be kicked out at closing. Diverse and impressive. Great cafe too.

The Canterbury Museum is always an interesting place to visit if you are visiting Christchurch On display are many of New Zealand heritage and history along with the special exhibits. Check the latest on their website to see what they have on display, on this occasion I visited there was an Air New Zealand exhibit for example.
