We spent an hour or so here. Firstly it is worth mentioning that is is free, yet the standard of exhibits was very high, the museum is well laid out and has some really interesting sections such as the history of Christchurch and the region....More

This is a great museum to visit. There is a lot to see and you need a good amount of time to do it. Or do it in stages. There is something for everyone.

The Canterbury Museum is one of the biggest museums I have been to! It is absolutely amazing to learn about the Maori culture as well as the early settlers' lives. I was taken aback by the amount of history that Canterbury has in a short...More

Great museum and adjacent to the botanical gardens so combine the 2! It's free of charge as well (or entry for gold coin donation) Finish with some dinner or coffee in town!

We stopped in the museum unplanned shortly before it closed. We went through quickly and saw they had some beautiful exhibits. Also the building itself is quite grand. Terrific staff. Certainly worth a more leisurely visit than we had time for

We spent far longer than anticipated at this museum. So full of excellent exhibits of the history of Christchurch, its inhabitants and New Zealand's development from early Maori dwellings through the centuries to the present day. Free entry with donations suggested. Well worth a visit.

I was surprised at the quality and quantity of the exhibits. From the outside I was ready to be underwhelmed but was pleasantly surprised. Well worth a walk on a rainy day.

This is a small museum but the displays are well done. The dioramas about prehistoric fauna are quite good and the dioramas go all the way up to the settlement of Christchurch. The stuffed albatrosses hanging from the ceiling on the top floor is one...More

The displays in this museum are fabulous. We took our overseas visitors to this museum expecting to be a bit bored while they looked through it. We were pleasantly surprised by how great the displays were and ended up spending more than two hours in...More

Hi there, I'd say at least 2-3 hours. Although I love history, I prefer to do museums in chunks otherwise, everything starts blending together. Maybe spend a little time there, then do one of the open bus tours which begin... More
