Even though certain areas of the park and surrounds are in the rebuild process there is still much to see and many decorative surrounds and monuments

Unfortunately, the place was totally deserted when we visited in the late afternoon. There was hardly any lights to ease the way in the darkness and the statues' somber faces only added to the gloomy and sad atmosphere. Must've been much more cheerful before the earthquake.

The few days that we stayed in Christchurch, we used this square as our passage everyday. It's a peaceful beautiful square. There are two statues there, one is Queen Victoria and the other one is Captain James Cook. The Avon river runs through this square, making the square more lovely and serene. This is a small urban park in the CBD, has a statue and an historic bridge over the Avon river but not really a destination for anything. Sometimes used for special events , better going to Hagley botanic gardens.

During Summertime Victoria Square is a lovelly piece of inner city green. River banks, fountain, historic statues, lovelly trees and a little of Christchurch's history is displayed. You can buy an icecream from the van, as many do. Sometimes musicians play.

There is no place on TA to review events, but for any visitors to Chch in the next three weeks (with or without any interest in cricket) I recommend you visit the fanzone in Victoria Square during any ICC World Cup game. There are bouncy castles for the kids, food & drinks to buy as well as a giant screen... More

It is difficult to imagine the square and gardens before the devastating earthquake three years ago. So much is fenced off because of dangerous structures that the beauty is lost. The main thing that struck me was the gardens are still beautifully attended and look great with the flowers.
