Had a Fantastic time going to the island, for young children it was an adventure from start to finish! A short ferry trip to the island and then with a walk around the island to explore or head to the swimming beach. The walk around the island was brilliant with 360 views which were wonderful. The walk isn't very hard... More

We had a great boat ridebto the island...the guide pointed out the nz dolphins which are quite different to those in australia, and there was a seal playing in the waves with the dolphin a real treat to see. He also pointed out a rare eagle on the cliffs and the wonderful coloured cliffs as u approach. Funny on the... More

Sitting in the middle of Lyttelton Harbour this island boasts a lot of history. In the 19th century it was used as a leper colony, the inhabitants being responsible for road construction etc. It was later used to house Captain Robert Falcon Scott's huskies before he set off for the South Pole. On my last visit the remnants of the... More

We went as a group in winter. Only one ferry trip, in each direction. Wood Pigeons have migrated onto the island

I visited Quail Island last summer with family. It is a DOC Island & is very historical. Lots of good walks round the island .It is accessed by ferry from Lyttleton Harbour. There are toilets there & safe swimming in the Harbour.

Having enjoyed many walks around banks peninsula, I finally got the opportunity to visit quail island. I wasn't disappointed. Most people I am told go anti -clockwise taking in the visitors centre first around the island. But we choose to go clockwise towards the ship-wrecks along the swimmers beaches etc, and back the way we came. We managed to have... More

We live on banks peninsula so this is an island I have visited many times. We camped over here as children on a school trip and I remember being frightened learning about the leprosy colony history. We are lucky enough to have access to boat rides over from Lyttelton which saves us the $30 per adult return fare and $15... More

The jetty is easy to find from Lyttleton end of the tunnel, you pay on the ferry ($30nz return). A boat ride on the harbouris a great way to start the trip. We took the 12.20 crossing and came back at 3.30pm. This was long enough as we were walking around the island, not having a picnic or swimming. It... More
