Tunnel beach is at the bottom of a short, but steep, walk across private land (closed 1st August to end of October, for lambing). In the 1870's it was farmed by John Cargill, he had a tunnel dug to allow his children to access the beach. The beach itself has stunning sandstone formations, some resident pidgeons, Sea caves and some very old graffiti.

We went on a extremely cold summers day. Ill prepared Aussies for this summer weather. We made it down the very steep cliff side to have to hurry back up when a massive hail cloud was ready to unleash. Be prepared, I am not the fittest guy around but it is a very steep long way back to the car.... More

We stopped here on our tour de catlins - the walk is nice but very steep. So you will get warm if you are cold :) butthe beach is wonderfull and behind the tunel we found fur seals, quite unexpectedly, so it was nice to stop there

It was windy and the rain did not stop....but we walk to the tinnel beach and it was worth the effort. The sound of the waves , blue water and huge rocks😀the way back is steep , but you have to do it.

A beautiful area, with beautiful views and fantastic wildlife. It's worth a visit if you are prepared for a hard walk.

Anyone close to dunedin or driving past on the southern scenic route should stop by this amazing place. The fitness requirements aren't very high, but to get back up to the car park you should be able to hike up a hill for about half an hour. The views at the bottom are totally worth it. They are spectacular! Depending... More

It's quite a steep walk down to Tunnel Beach but is definitely worth the effort. There are some wonderful rock formations caused by water erosion, plenty of bird life and we were also lucky enough to share a rock with a sunbathing seal. A word of warning though. Make sure you lock your car and don't leave anything worth stealing... More

A charming and steep walk to a small beach with beautiful coastal views. Make sure you go at low tide.

Walk down the path and through the tunnel dug through the rocks to access the stunning little beach. It can be quite popular with locals and tourists.

Yes, there is a long walk down (and what feels like an even longer walk back up) but for the scenery and peacfulness of tunnel beach, it is totally worth it. The cliff outlook is lovely, covered in grass and you can see the natural tunnel formation created by the sea. But the really cool bit is taking the steps... More

It takes about 30 minutes to get to the area where you can nice photos. It is definitely worth the visit if you have time to do so. Else it is ok to give it a miss as well.
