Stewart Island Experience operates daily ferry service between Bluff and Stewart Island all year around. Stewart Island is New Zealand's ultimate eco-tourism destination and the location of Rakiura National Park. During the one hour ferry crossing, keep a look out for the Mollymawks (Albatross) that often follow the vessel. Daily coach connections operate between Bluff and Invercargill, and in summer also to Te Anau and Queenstown (summer only).

This is a special place. It's an island off the South Island of New Zealand . It has less than 400 people , 4 restaurants , and 1 petrol pump. It deserves at least 4 days. Wander the foot paths and tracks, view wild Kiwis, eat blue cod or maybe even muttonbird, visit Ulva island , watch the sunrise &/or... More

This was a good way to get to SI. The team are organized, the service good and as someone else said, it's clean and comfortable. If you get sea sick try to get somewhere outside for the journey. One of our group wouldn’t take the ferry again (hence the advice above!) but the rest of us definitely would.

When Real Journeys says that "getting to Stewart Island is half the adventure," they aren't kidding. The sea was rough going over, but calm coming back. Somehow I preferred the rough sailing -- never a dull moment as we rolled and pitched in the large, very safe catamaran. And birds flying nearby were identified for us. A nice benefit.

Ferry was on time, fast, clean, comfortable. Crew pointed out sights and birds and sealife on the way. I left my camera behind and got it back on the next trip - this probably wouldn't have happened in the US!!

A nice seamless journey to Stewart Island. I get motion sick, but was able to sit outside for the journey. The crew are great, and there were no problems.

Foveaux Strait is the notoriously fickle stretch of water that separates Stewart Island from mainland New Zealand. There are several crossings daily, the one hour dash across the strait is performed by one of two small but powerful passenger ferries in almost all weathers.I was lucky enough to cross in poor conditions, 45 knot winds were whipping up a heavy... Staff were great on both trips. On the way out from Bluff got the commentary of points of interest. Staff were very good with people who were not coping with the large swells. I liked the return trip discount that we got by booking return.

Our passage was cancelled because of bad weather so they rebooked us for the next day. They were very nice. Let us use their phone to call our B&B and other tours. Spent the night in Invercargill and went the next morning. Ride was still rough but the boat is very tight and the seats are inside, dry and cozy.... More

My stomach is still in my throat after the boat ride from Stewart Island to Bluff this morning. And this was supposed to be smooth sailing! However, if you want to visit Stewart Island, and you should, you have to make this trip twice. Sorry!

On a good day you can get great photos of the sea birds soaring over the straight sit back and relax with a wine or tea and coffee. The staff are friendly and helpful. Only one hour from Bluff this is a great way to arrive at the Island.
