Matt Jones took us on a guided tour of the island. He was amazing. he knows his birds and where and how to find them. I don't think we missed anything. he was informative about the palnts as well but his knowledge and understanding of birds shone through. We then did the pelagic tour with another matt. A bad day... This was one of my top experiences on my tour of New Zealand. My husband and I took the afternoon Half Day Bird and Botany Guided Walk on Ulva Island. I was thrilled to have Ulva Goodwillie as our guide as she is definitely one who truly respects and appreciates nature. Her extensive knowledge of Ulva Island's history, botany, and... More

Ulva Island was colonized by the Maori a few centuries ago. Ulva Goodwillie, our guide, was named after the island. She visits it frequently and even wrote a guide about it's wildlife. A watertaxi took us to the island within 7 minutes. The island has a lot of endemic plants and animals, especially birds and not surprisingly Ulva knew to... More

I can't say enough good things about the guided walks Ulva offers. Our group of 8 made it easy to see the birds and Ulva went out of her way to ensure we all got good looks. She is incredibly enthusiastic and really lives and breaths this stuff. We saw Saddlebacks and Stewart Island Robin as soon as we disembarked... More

Ulva has been guiding folks around Ulva Island for about 17 years now, and obviously she knows her stuff and loves the bird life of this very special place. It was a treat to spend an afternoon with her.

We went with Ulva as our guide. It was as if she had the birds choreographed to appear, (perhaps she did!). As well as the birds, highlights morepork, saddleback, rifleman and penguins Ulva identified trees, ferns and plants in a gentle but knowledgeable style. We also had a history of the island, the postman and his impact on the plants... More

Our tour to Ulva went off perfectly. The water taxi ride from Golden Bay felt safe and easy. Our guide, Matt, went out of his way to show us as many birds as possible (we saw all that we wanted with one exception but then we saw blue penguins which we didn't expect). And he also gave us a ton... More

We went to Stewart Island primarily to go birding on Ulva Island. The weather proved wet and windy, and we were only able to get there once. Fortunately, the one day the water taxis were able to get out there, we were guided by the very personable and knowledgeable Matt Jones of Ulva's Guided Walks. He helped us find all... More

Ulva Goodwillie of Ulva's Guided walks met us with genuine welcome for a 7 minute boat ride from Stewarts Island to Ulva Island. Ulva's knowledge of the island and plants and birds is amazing. The three hours went far too quickly. I would advise anyone planning to visit the island to book this tour as we saw and learnt far more than a casual visitor would. Ulva is a delightful person to be with.
