The island is an amazing sanctuary

Enjoy your experience even more by doing a guided bird watching tour. We went with Ulva Goodwillie and thoroughly enjoyed her knowledge of the birds and plants on the island.

Ulva herself led our 10-person group from the Seabourn Encore on a 2-hour guided walk on Ulva Island & it was wonderful. Ulva is a great guide--very much in love with the place and the birds and plants, and very knowledgeable. We saw three saddlebacks, robins, bell birds, penguins, a weka and various gulls, white terns and shags. The forest... More

This is a small island off Stewart island which is south of the South Island of New Zealand . Take at least 3-4 hours, go by scheduled water taxi or pick a long tour. The island has no stoats, weasels, deer or rats. It's full of native birds and plants .

Spent 6hrs on Ulva ....with bird book instead of with guide and had fabulous time. Saw all the birds on the list except Kiwi although met some people who did see one in the day. No water so take plenty of hot and a picnic.

took a morning guided tour from Beaks and Feathers, Angie showed us around the island and we were fortunate enough to see a Kiwi. The morpork up the tree you would never have found without a guide and her knowledge meant we saw so much. the island has a history that is easily recognized when your guide is there to... More

Our tour wth Real Journeys was spectacilar. The nature guides really know their material and present the information in engaging, exciting ways. We saw and heard an amazing variety of bird life.

One of the coolest experiences I've ever had! If you have any interest in birds, this is the place for you! There is an abundance of endemic bird species on this predator-free island, also many introduced birds. They are not afraid of people - we had wekas pulling on our shoelaces, thinking they were worms, I assume. NZ robins hopped... More

We took the noon ferry and spent a little over 6 hours exploring the island. It can be a shorter trip if you don't want to spend that much time there. Non-bird enthusiasts might not appreciate the island, but should still check it out.

The Patterson Inlet cruise is not a cruise in the 'serene and dignified' sense of the term. The waters around Stewart Island can be quite rough even in summer. To ensure safe passage, the journey is made on a loud and beefy Stewart Island ferry. One of the highlights of the cruise was a nature walk on Ulva Island,a predator-free DOC... More
