85 Kilometres of scenic beauty - from sea-level to Alpine mountains, breath-taking scenery and adrenaline pumping heights. I've walked it over 4 days (the huts are first class) and ran it in 1 day on the Old Ghost Ultra Marathon. A mountain biker's dream (or...More

I've been to NZ on and off over the past 7 years and this is by far the best thing I've ever done here. If you're hesitating, just book it. Also make sure you read "Spirit to the Stone" the book about the creation of...More

A fantastic experience, though its certainly a challenging ride, especially between Ghost Lake Hut and the bottom of the Steps. Beyond the steps its much more rideable for intermediate riders, with some excellent flow. Gorgeous huts in great places! We did it in three days,...More

For a strong/advanced mountain biker this is a douable two day bike. The hardest work is the 800 vertical meter climb on the first day, and in average or below average weather this is certainly a character building climb. Make sure you have some fitness...More

An amazing trip! We had done Heaphy so did this backwards and although it was harder, still very doable and so much fun! Lucky enough to have sunshine and epic views at the top. Awesome to do 20km downhill at the end too :-)

The weather didn't play ball, but that was a minor consideration and we've already joined the back of the line in preparation for our next trip. The vision for the track and the way it came about is incredible, and the ride itself - truly...More

Wow what a great walk. Amazing birdlife, bush life, track, huts, toilets, swing bridges, history. This walk has everything. 85km is very doable. The variety every day is fab and the sky at night is incredible. GO DO IT

We planned and began this trip with some trepidation. I was expecting it to be tough, a long climb, some technical bits and some narrow challenging trails especially with a load of gear on board. We planned well, the right crew of riders who could...More

Two of us mountain biked the trail and stayed in the Specimen Hut. We have completed most of NZ's mountain bike trails and found Old Ghost Road to be a spectacular mix of NZ scenery, flora and fauna as well as a fantastic physical challenge....More

Hi Adam There are water tanks at each of the hut sites as well as a number of tributaries along the length of the trail, you should never be too far from a water source. I hope this answers your question.

Thanks for the review Steve. I just booked the Ghost Lake Hut for Feb and was planning to finish the route on the next day. I was wondering if you felt the 2nd day was too long? I noticed a few other reviewers who did it in two days went one hut further. Did you catch a shuttle at the end? Thanks
