Newcastle History

A nice museum explaining the area. Spent about 1 hour. Liked Coal exhibit, and the understanding of the cultural changes with immigration.

The Newcastle Museum offers excellent historical information presented in an easy to follow way. There is also a children's science section to the museum that is very hands-on. This highly informative museum is a must see when visiting Newcastle. A small snack area and museum shop are also part of the museum.

Great place to take children as there is an interactive science display plus an indoor playground for under-5's. And it's free! Travelling exhibitions change frequently, there and is a charge for these.

There is a method of displaying and teaching people about a place and this museum ticks the box. Well laid out, covered such a variety of displays and really catches your attention. Most interesting and a lovely city to visit......

One part is for kids, one is about mines and a great litte show about how the steel process was done, Full lights and smoke, impressive for someone who never visit a steel factory!

Rain, Rain, Rain, but what a perfect option to keep our 2yr old entertained...no trip is complete without visiting this museum if you have small children. Fantastic indoor playground (free) for all ages (0-6) and excellent hands on activities in the science exhibition. Museum also has a great exhibition of Newcastle history, with only 1-2 hours needed to see everything

Situated close to the Wharf walkway near the Crowne Plaza is a very interesting museum that traces the history of Newcastle with some fine exhibits and presentations. We were fortunate to arrive in time for the BHP hall coming alive with a very good presentation on how life was like working in the steel works. The exhibits gave a very... More

We have not visited the Newcastle Museum since our children were very young and the were at their old location. We visited this week to see the Japanese tattoo photographic display currently visiting. The exhibit was well presented and very interesting. The space at their new location is a wonderful old tram shed with soaring ceilings and lovely old industrial... More

I've enjoyed Newcastle Museum for many years, back since it was on Hunter/King Streets. It's a terrific place to spend time, with many interesting exhibits.
