About
Nobbys Lighthouse sits high on Nobbys Headland guarding the entrance to Newcastle Harbour. It has been an active lighthouse for over 150 years and continues to safely direct ships in and out of Newcastle harbour. The site is an iconic landmark at well-loved location in Newcastle. The Nobbys Lighthouse grounds are open every Sunday from 10am to 4pm and entry to the site is free. Parking is located adjacent to Nobbys Beach at Camp Shortland. The lighthouse is an 800 metre walk from the car park, with a steep climb at the end. There is a small kiosk on site serving tea, coffee and cold drinks. Visitors are welcome to pack their own supplies and make the most of the beautiful 360 degree views. The current lease holder, Newcastle Now, cares for the site to ensure it is open to the public every Sunday of the year. A proud and dedicated team of volunteers works hard to welcome visitors, they love to share their knowledge of the city and its surrounds with tourists. Newcastle Now, is undertaking an ambitious plan to raise funds to support the development of the site, ultimately delivering a unique tourism venue to serve the local community and visitors to the region.

It's a must see place when you are in Newcastle. We got there around 4pm in Jan and temperature is still a low. Very windy when walking on the beach and a lit of walk to the lighthouse. It's not open when we reached the lighthouse but the view around it is fantastic. I would highly recommend a morning walk or a day trip in that area.

Had meant to visit here on our last trip but didn’t realise it’s only open at the weekend, 8 till 4 currently.
Finally got to walk up there this last weekend. Good views. No charge. One information board with some history. Can look into the original lighthouse keepers cottages (empty). Expect to spend 15 minutes walking up there from the Surf Club and the same looking around.

Good walkway on top of the break wall towards Nobbys. No general public access to the lighthouse itself but the wall is lovely to walk along. Views of Nobbys beach and the hunter river. When the ships leave and enter the port you get an excellent view from here. Below the lighthouse is the abandoned WW2 light tower and bunker. Nobbys was once an island and was joined to the mainland via a convict built break wall taking 38 years to complete. Some of the rock was quarried from the island itself completely changing the shape of it.

Great spot for a nice walk or scooter up the the Lighthouse, great views and nice to have a play at the beach afterwards. Not great if you are scared of dogs though like our little one as there is a dog beach is on the left as you walk up the the lighthouse and loads of people walking dogs.

Lovely walk along the breakwall, even when the lighthouse isn't open. When you can go in, the maritime museum is worth a look. If it isn't the walk has sculptures to take in and great views of the city, the harbour and the ocean. Interesting to watch ships going in and out. Pleasant walk extension to go along the harbour walkway to Honeysuckle development, where you can enjoy a meal, go to the museum and art centre or see exhibitions at the visitor centre.

Love doing the walk up the hill from Nobbys Beach to Nobbys Lighthouse, not only for the exercise, but for the fabulous views (on a clear and sunny day) once you get to the top. The buildings are slowly being restored and are looking good. It really is a landmark on the Newcastle Skyline. The unfortunate part is that the area is only open on Sunday's between 1000 and 1600. Pity it can't be opened on additional days, even just Saturday's which would be awesome. I think it's a good tourist and local drawcard.

Sometimes we walk up here for a variation to our usual break wall walk. Besides the fantastic view & beautiful breeze, the lighthouse & surrounding buildings are beautifully maintained. There are tours available & the volunteers are welcoming & enthusiastic presenters. Great place to visit. And great location for occasional special events!

Visited on Thursday 14th February. We walked out there to find the whole area fenced off, we were disappointed not to be able to walk up to the Lighthouse to check it out.

Well worth the walk out the break wall and the climb up to Nobbys for the view back over Newcastle. We visited it on a open day and enjoyed the views and totally recommend
