- Stevie C1 contributionWine tasting with JamesMy husband and I did the wine tasting with James who was absolutely awesome! His knowledge on not just the wines, but food pairings and also educating us on the wine making process was fantastic. We learnt so many things about the grape to glass process and happily left with some beautiful wines. The Cru Club also was very good value to join. We will definitely be back with friends and family. A great morning!Hi Stevie C. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Brokenwood, and we will be sure to pass your kind words onto James! Thank you again, and welcome to the Cru Club. Our tasting took longer than usual as we explored the wines and asked James questions, all of which he answered with a wealth of background knowledge. - Pam S14 contributionsWine tasting with a plus.My husband and I experienced the Brokenwood Journey with Amy as our host. We may not have chosen this but it was arranged by our travel company as part of a two day visit to the Hunter Valley. However we thoroughly enjoyed it ,especially exploring the wine and food pairings. I think my palate is shot as I age as I couldn’t taste much difference in the taste of the wine before and after food . The concept is excellent however and much thought had obviously gone into the pairings. It was great to have a personal tour of the winery with Amy who was very knowledgeable and personable. All in all a great experience.Hi Pam S. It was a pleasure to welcome you to Brokenwood Wines! Thank you for sharing your feedback, we are so glad to hear that you enjoyed your experience. When I dropped in, I asked for a taste of their top semillon wines. They poured me two or three tastes free of charge and I ended up buying their Semillon from 2023. It was excellent. - Anon3 contributionsTroy is a gemI visited Brokenwood Wines with my partner and we had the most fabulous experience. Troy (a member of the team) was able to offer some great insight into a variety of wines that were on offer but was also able to talk more widely about the wine making process. Troy has a real passion for wine and this was apparent in the level of detail he went into on the day. Both myself and my partner left Brokenwood feeling a great deal more knowledgable about Brokenwood Wines and the wine industry. Kudos to Troy and the Brokeneood team for their immense hospitality.Hi there. Thank you for visiting Brokenwood Wines. - Canadagirl63Ottawa, Canada97 contributionsBrokenwood Wines was a great stop on our e-bike wine tourWe rented e-bikes on a very hot day but really wanted to go to Brokenwood so made the trek and we were very happy we did. Decided to do a wine tasting before lunch and we were lucky to get Troy as our wine guide. So many great wines but also lots of explanations about the wines, the different ways to taste them, the differences in storing wine and we decided to buy the Coravin system for home based on our discussion with him about it. The wines were delicious and we bought our favourite and then headed to the patio for lunch of cheese and charcuterie and it was perfect! If you are considering stopping there I would highly recommend!Hi Karen. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. If you have a genuine interest in wine then this is not the place to go in the Hunter Valley. It’s all about tourism - viticulture and winemaking is incidental. We did the ($25pp) single vineyard tasting and the staff knew nothing about the vineyards and wines, they just gave us the pre prepared spiel every time. Compared to our other experiences at Tyrrells and Mount Pleasant we were really disappointed. No doubt that Brokenwood are an iconic winery that make some very good wines, but this experience just left us cold and $50 poorer. We departed without buying anything to get our tasting fee back. Why throw good money after bad? Leave this one for the tourist hordes and go to real cellar door, would be my advice.

Dear Dave, I am very sorry that your experience recently at our winery Cellar Door was disappointing. Our people pride themselves on delivering the best experience available in the Hunter Valley in terms of wine knowledge, friendliness, experience and other things to do when visiting the Hunter Valley. Brokenwood is the current "Hunter Valley Cellar Door of the Year", as judged by secret shoppers working for the Industry Body, the Hunter Valley Wine and Tourism Association.
Nevertheless, it seems you and your guest did not receive the best available service and for that we are sorry.
if you would like to give us another chance, please contact me at geoff@brokenwood.com.au and i would be very happy to organise a return visit to remember - for all the right reasons.
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review and for considering my request.
best regards,

I visited Brokenwood for the first time earlier this month and I have to say I'm disappointed in myself for not going before now. The atmosphere is beautiful and the team were all very aware of making sure that COVID guidelines were followed.
Unfortunately, you cannot roam freely anymore but one of the staff was very happy to give us a brief history and tour of the winery while we waited for our tasting to be set up. Once it was ready the host was very knowledgeable on the wines and extremely friendly. Unfortunately, I cannot remember his name but he is a credit to Brokenwood. We enjoyed it so much that between six of us we purchased enough wine for two of our group to become members. The Sticky Wicket is a must-have and so is the Rosato. My only regret is that I only bought one bottle of each.
All that to say my friends and I already know the first place we'll be visiting next time we're in the Hunter Valley.

My wife and I visited Brokenwood wines for the first time not knowing the history or the background of the winery. I was tasting and my wife wasn’t but you wouldn’t know that from the way they accommodated her during COVID restrictions.
I was allocated to Baiden a young man whose knowledge of the winery and the regions belied his youthful looks. He was not only an excellent host but an engaging one for those that were genuinely interested in the Brokenwood vineyards story. A story that spans 4 states across Australia.
Baiden quickly understood my interest beyond the normal tasting experience and quickly pivoted to some of the more premium (add on) options for the tasting. To which I handed over my credit card and entered a world of bliss for a Graveyard tasting.
As a result of Baiden’s service I sm now happily a Single.Vineyard member. As a result I then got to meet the broader team And their service was outstanding. We visited the winery daily as a result and couldn’t fault the customer service. Will definitely return on our next visit to the Hunter. Thank you Baiden and Elaine.

Loved our tasting with Baiden. He did a fantastic job of explaining the wines and also what foods they would go with. The decor and tasting pods were absolutely fantastic and can’t wait to come back. The price of tasting was reasonable for the amount of wines tasted. We bought some Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

May 2022
Been many times to Brokenwood and always had a great experience. Went in the middle of May 2022 with visiting friends (tourists) and unfortunately it just wasn’t the same as the past. I know things changed post-Covid, but they are really missing the mark here. I was quite embarrassed.
You can only do scheduled wine tastings, so you have to book on the hour. We were there for lunch and still had to make a booking for wine tasting. Went up to make the booking and saw two groups decide to leave and not wait.
The charge has increased to $25 per person. So I paid $125 for the 5 of us even though we were having lunch there. It is now redeemable if you spend $50 per person.
We finished our lunch and went over to wine tasting........there were 3 other people. So a whole 8 in the whole area (the last time I was there it was buzzing with 100 people dinning and wine tasting).
So Paid $125 to taste bloomin Cricket Pitch ($18 in Dan Murphys), but sold here for $25.
I realise the wineries have had it tough, but I don't think this is the way to do it.
I would avoid and try smaller wine makers.

The staff here are the highlight in my opinion. Very welcoming and work very hard to keep guests well looked after and informed, apologetically keeping us updated with our delayed tasting session ('Taste' at $25 per person). Even providing colouring sheets and pencils for our two kids. I just struggle with the large, and what feels like an impersonal experience compared to some other wineries. We waited about 30 minutes before we could be accommodated, two of us joining a total group of about 8 people, with our host doing their best to talk over what was a very busy and noisy afternoon. We couldn't fault our host, although they do seem very well versed and more tenacious in selling the virtues of becoming a member here. More so than the other wineries we visited anyway. The $25 is refundable if you spend $50 or more, so we ended up buying a couple of bottles.

The decor at Brokenwood is stylish and modern with lots of warm wood and feature green tiles. The service was excellent. The food & wines
were top class.
The ingredients were all fresh and top quality. We started with warm fresh bread, which had a lovely crust, and olives.
Our group shared a few entrees. Special mention must go to the whitebait which was a standout dish. The whitebait was cooked perfectly and the serving was generous. It was served with a spicy mayonnaise sauce. The burrata with a salad tomatoes and nectarines was simple and delicious. The burrata was silky smooth. The addition of nectarines really added to the dish.
For mains I had the confit duck and beetroot tart. It was just beautiful. The barramundi with clams and a spicy broth was also well received. Another standout dish was the Wagyu beef with bone marrow and hand cut chips.
The service was excellent and the waitress was very helpful when we were choosing some fantastic Brokenwood wines.
As a big group we appreciated that we weren’t restricted to a set menu and there was no surcharge.
If you’re in the Hunter I would highly recommend dining at Brokenwood.

If you like big commercial cellar doors this one is for you. I knew what I am signing up for and got what I expected. Kind of production line tasting with a group of people served by on person, going through a predefined list of wines in a relative hurry to vacate the place for the next group.
Having said that, the girl running the show was flexible, poured some extra wines when we asked and knew her stuff.
There is $25 tasting fee, but refundable when you purchase $50 worth of wine. This was the highest tasting fee from any of the wineries and if it was not refundable, I'd say rip off. Since we always purchase wine it was not a problem.
Another interesting thing about Brokenwood. A lot of their wines do not come from Hunter Valley and all that we purchased we either Vic or SA. Kind of disappointing since I like to drink regional wines, but this is true for most of the bigger wineries there.

You enter the building into a reception area from where you are directed to either the wine bar/deck, wine tasting area or restaurant. It feels a bit corporate, but seems to work well as there are distinct areas with dedicated wait staff.
Wine tastings only happen at specific times and unless you have lots of time to wait around for the next one, it pays to book in advance as the tastings are not very frequent. A good alternative is to opt for a flight of wines in the wine bar where you can also have one of the platters. There is a choice of two flights (three wines each) with a moderately priced ‘favourites’ selection or the double-the-price ‘reserve’ selection. Do not expect to pay HV wine tasting rates though. It is significantly more pricey. Our server gave a very brief description of each wine, but the printed tasting notes made up of this. It would have been good to hear or read a bit about the history of the place and the wines though.
We (almost) visited twice. On our first visit, we were recommended to book for breakfast the following day. This turned out to be a big mistake. When we turned up the following morning, we were then told that they do not actual serve breakfast but only coffee and pastries. Had we been told this when we were "sold" the idea of making a reservation for breakfast, we would not have wasted the time. Unfortunately it had a significant flow on effect on our plans for that day which impacted overall impressions of the place.

Four of us attended a members wine taste at Brokenwood Wines fabulous new Cellar Door facility in the Hunter Valley.
The taste was hosted by Leah who is such a credit to the winery. We very much enjoyed the new tasting rooms and new wine releases as well as Brokenwood’s top end wines which always impress. Thanks again Leah for an amazing experience. The best tasting we’ve had in a very long time.
