The Spit, Gold Coast, QLD
A great walk (or jog) from Sheraton Mirage all the way to The Spit Gold Coast along the coast. It’s about a 50min walk to The Spit (which has been recently upgraded with a new path along the breakwater with some seating leading to the Spit).

Could not believe such a gem existed in Gold Coast. We had been to Sea World a number of times but we did not go a bit further find this. Glad we found it. It is a natural, iconic landmark a pier like structure that leads to an old light house. The waves are so beautiful to watch. The cafe near had awesome coffee and food (fish taco, yum!).

The Spit is an iconic place local Gold Coasters. Personally go there nearly every week.
Need to knows
1. It is a very vey popular dog of leash beach all year. There's facilities to wash your dog off on the path to the sand pumping jetty. Dog drink stations, bins, doggy poop bag stations bread the bathrooms sand down the path. Your dog is supposed to be on leash from the car park til the fence under the jetty.
2. The sand pumping jetty is popular for anglers. You do have to pay just to walk out on it. Get a good view though.
3. Council has cracked down on people camping here issuing on the spot fines and there's now gates to stop people after dark.
4. There's a nice cafe with views of the Broadwater. If you go around the back, you can sit on the patio to eat and have your pooch with you.
5. Very popular with Scuba Divers. Have dived there myself. Saw the biggest Flathead ever. People also snorkle and surfer's either paddle across the Mouth to Sth Stadbroke or there's a water taxi.
6. Lots of parking
7. There is Surf Life savers in summer on the right hand side of the jetty. Becareful swimming here when it's rough. Can be treacherous.
It's been saved from becoming a cruise ship terminal. Council plan to do some upgrades to the area.

We drove here from Broadbeach whilst exploring the area. The cafe was great with a huge variety of food and drinks both takeaway and eat in. The sand pump is an interesting and unusual engineering item. Information boards inside the cafe explain the engineering and history of the area.Great for walking and taking some calm time out of the bustle that is Surfers Paradise.

Visited this iconic spot on the Gold Coast and made sure we had enough change to pay for parking. What a surprise, here we were at the gateway to the Gold Coast water ways and park at no charge. Coming from Victoria they charge you to park at any non descript beach anywhere around the bay. (And you are seriously fined, even in winter if you don't pay). Well you could imagine our delight when we saw people, humans, playing with their dogs on the beach. No leads. This is unheard of in the nanny state, no dogs, no fun. What a modent. You are really allowed to do this. Have fun

My favourite thing to do at the Spit is to grab some fish and chips from Petes fish market and pull up the car along the western shore overlooking the broadwater and enjoy fish and chips with the wife on a lazy afternoon.
Here are a few other things to do up there
Snorkelling: All along the north wall on high tide is good for snorkelling. I have seen so many people diving down there but not sure what is right down. I have seen some colour tropical fish hanging around nothing like the reefs but still worth a look.
Swimming: Patrolled beach to the right of the sand pumping jetty, great for swimming when the surf is down however when its rough not that fun. If you are going to go for a swim in the broadwater side opt for the side that faces towards the west, I wouldn't recommend swimming where all the boats are moored as some boats drop their waste and the water can be pretty gross with the bottom full of sh**.
Watching the sunset: Follow the road out to the spit and turn left, choose a place along the western side of the spit and pull up in your vehicle. Bring some fish and chips from petes which is only 5 mins down the road.
Surfing: Left side of the pumping jetty offers some good waves when the swell is good. On the massive days it gets a little rough with big sweeps pushing through the sand pumping jetty.
Fishing: Anywhere around the spit, Jew fish off the jetty but you have to pay to fish. Fishing in where the boats are moored will see bait eaten off by Toad fish and tiny whiting.
Boating: Moor in the stadium for a calm water but its pretty gross for swimming. I would suggest head over to waver break and moor up in the tiny inlet opposite the grand hotel on the South Western side
Camping: Its frowned upon but I've never heard of anyone copping a fine for camping on the spit. Heaps of people have their campers set up for the night which doesn't cost you anything unless the council end up giving you a fine. The fine is about the same as staying in a caravan park on the coast anyway so the risk isn't that great .

The spit is a beautiful place to visit, go for a walk, swimming, sun bathe, fish or soak up the scenery. We live locally and visit the spit often, today we found a nice little spot off the main road to walk through the sand and admire some beautiful sights. It’s worth the visit and is a good way to unwind and relax by the water or on the sand

I am a local and have been coming to the spit over 32 years to surf, fish, out my boat in the water and play with my dog, I have eaten at the coffee shop and done the federation walk 3 times. It’s an excellent place to bring family or as I do now, ride my bike swim and fish , I hope they keep the spit as natural and lush as it is now, it’s not developed at all apart from the green grass and palm trees.
