This is a great river the closer you get to the mouth... We have even seem seals and the fishing is good. But the closer you get to Launceston, the more it turns into a mud stuck sewer.

There are many places where you can stop to see the river from Launceston. Also if you go to the Tamar wineries.

Aside from being picturesque take the effort to visit Tamar Ridge Winery for some really lovely views, a pretty little garden to sit in, very helpful and not at all pushy wine tasting staff. Great for lunch, especially their cheese and terrine platters

We have visited Launceston on 10 occasions since 1974 and every visit has brought many new discoveries. The fresh food , the variety of unique wines, history and landscape that has now being recorded by transplanted mainland artists like Zaadstra at Gravelly Beach who understand the beauty of the river which the locals describe in their stories. The connection with... More

Beautiful countryside, very pleasant driving. At the Beauty point Hotel right on the water the meal was superb. Had the Duo of Calamari and Flake, just the best meal!

Having had a very pleasant cruise down the Tamar on the previous day we thought we would visit some of the places on the river by car. We targeted Beauty Point, and the riverside cafe. Big mistake! Nothing beautiful there and nothing too special about the cafe although pleasant enough, the pics in the ads were very misleading. We went... More

Around Launceston itself, the Tamar River looks quite grotty. There's not a lot along it in town. The playground beside it was great, complete with public gym equipment. The boardwalk is overgrown along either side and the view of the river is muddy with rubbish gathered along the banks.
