At the heritage-listed Bendigo Joss House Temple, a Chinese place of worship which was constructed in the 1860s, you will discover more about Chinese beliefs and the story of the Chinese who came to Bendigo in search of gold.

During your visit the dedicated guides at the temple will regale you with fascinating stories about the lives of Chinese migrants on the Bendigo goldfields back in the mid-1800s and explain some of the intriguing beliefs and rituals that were practiced at the temple during this time.

Constructed using locally handmade bricks and painted red - symbolising happiness, strength and vitality - the Bendigo Joss House Temple is considered a significant and unique part of Bendigo's cultural history.

We were quite impressed with the authenticity and cultural details of the temple. In addition to the very helpful attendants, information sheets were provided to explain the background and history of the displays in each room. We appreciate that the temple has been maintained/restored so well in keeping with Chinese tradition and its respectful acceptance within a western society. A... More

I attended the lantern festive and blessing of new Lions at the Joss House while it was interesting the space for the event was too small and poorly arranged with a potted pine tree spoilt the view and my ability to take great photos. they really need to rethink the space or sell tickets so it is not so crowded... Interesting place but noticeably still a place of worship as well as tourist spot. The attendant that greeted us was a wealth of information and pleasant to chat with.

Stopped off on the tram ride without much enthusiasm but found this place very interesting. The building itself is fascinating but the guide was able to give us a load of information on the history of the temple and of the town of Bendigo. You do not have to take the tram to visit this temple but there is a... More

We saw the Joss house many years ago & decided it was time to have a return visit. (31.12.16) The 2 gentleman working there were just delightful & very informative. There's so much history here & I thoroughly recommend that you add a visit to your "things to do" list when you are in Bendigo.

This is an ideal half hour stop if you're riding the tram. However, we ended up staying for a whole hour as we chatted with the chap on the desk. His knowledge of the gold rush era was limitless. We were enthralled by the stories, especially as we are from the Ballarat area and have some gold rush knowledge ourselves.... More

We have just spent a hour at the temple but it didn't even feel like a hour because the guide Mikelle was beyond excellent. He gave us so much insight into the temple and the stories behind it which made it incredibly fascinating. It's a small shrine but excellently maintained all the way from the 1800s. The shrine has all... More

Very historic temple with a very well informed volunteer guide. This was a second visit because we were with friends but still we found it most interesting.

Heard about Joss House Temple it is the oldest Chinese place of worship on its original site in Australia. We decided to see it for our selves and found it very interesting and moving. So much history and quite a beautiful small Temple also the young lady who gave us the commentary was so friendly, explained the whole story with... More
