Undoubtedly the most authentic way to experience Whanganui River’s scenery...

Undoubtedly the most authentic way to experience Whanganui River’s scenery and history. Regular cruises aboard the iconic Waimarie Paddle Steamer - NZ’s only coal-fired paddle steamer operating from the golden riverboat era - are available during warmer months (October - April) and private charter cruises can be made by arrangement anytime. View cruise entertainment, timetable, prices and purchase tickets online or at the Waimarie Centre, where you can also uncover river memorabilia at the Waimarie Museum and marvel at a 134-year old architecturally designed building.

What an amazing credit to the many volunteers who have put in tens of thousands of hours restoring this steamer from its watery grave to pristine condition. All the sounds and smells of the past, a friendly and helpful crew. I even got to write a message to be carried by pigeon back to base which we collected afterwards. Great... More

This is an amazing story of the steamboat which came back from a buried wreck, to again tun the lower river as it had gone decades ago. If you go one thing in Whanganui, do this. Its unique, and the little museum at its base (including a second steamer not yet restored) adds to the enjoyment.

A 'must do' experience if you are passing through or staying anywhere near Whanganui. An original river steam paddle ship steeped in the pioneering history of New Zealand, rescued by enthusiasts from its ignominious decline in the river bed and restored to its previous glory. There's internal seating if its chilly and plenty more on deck providing great views during... More

A leisurely trip, on the Wanganui River, taking in the history and the sights from the decks of the Waimarie Paddle Stemer was a wonderful way to spend a morning. Watching the coal being shovelled into the furnace, the great clouds of smoke and steam that erupted every time the furnace was refuelled and listening to the rhythmic chuff of... More
