Undoubtedly the most authentic way to experience Whanganui River’s scenery and history. Regular cruises aboard the iconic Waimarie Paddle Steamer - NZ’s only coal-fired paddle steamer operating from the golden riverboat era - are available during warmer months (October - April) and private charter cruises can be made by arrangement anytime. View cruise entertainment, timetable, prices and purchase tickets online or at the Waimarie Centre, where you can also uncover river memorabilia at the Waimarie Museum and marvel at a 134-year old architecturally designed building.

The ship was built over 100 years ago and served on the river. It was then abandoned and ended up on the river bed. A group of enthusiasts rescued and renovated it and they now offer 2 hour rivers trips most days of the week. Not a lot to see on the trip but well worth the experience and contributing... More

Spent a lovely couple of hours on this wonderful boat, beautiful scenery - lovely red wine ! The only downside was that we couldn't hear the commentary. A must do.

We went on the one-hour evening cruise on this restored and very handsome paddle steamer. The trip was just up the river and back, with a chance to relax and take in the scenery. There is a fully licenced bar (with a few free bar nibbles) and a one-man band supplied live music on the back deck. Even though it... More

Nice gentle cruise up the river that I enjoyed. Added bonuses were complete access to the whole boat including the engine room and a nice little touch of sending a message back to base via carrier pigeon. Only suggestion would be to improve the PA system as it was hard to hear some of the commentary.

We've visited Whanganui lots of times but had never got around to doing this trip on the Waimarie. More fool us! Everything about the trip was fantastic - the staff and the scenery. We took our 2 year old nephew and he thoroughly enjoyed it! Will definitely do it again

Great trip up the river for a total of two hours-one hour up and one hour back. Good Customer Service from Booking lady to crew manning the Vessel. Interesting visit to the engine room. If your lucky you may get to release a pigeon. Coffee etc available onboard. Overall a good experience and value for money.

I grew up seeing the Waimarie sunk in the silt everyday we drove down the hill, we watched it being slowly restored and when it was up and running this trip was one we were always going to do, but shamefully didn't get around to. When a friend came from the USA to stay we planned a trip on the... More

We did the 'cruising at 11' with the oldies visiting from Oz and our young family. Great trip out, well looked after, knowledgeable crew in terms of the boat's history and the local area. Plenty of room on board even though the cruise was booked out. The fantastic weather helped!

Thanks Stu. Glad you have a great time, you remind me that even a bad weather day on the PS Waimarie is better than a good weather day in the office! More

Very helpful and knowledgeable staff/volunteers. Boat was totally ship-shape and spotlessly clean. Refreshments were mainly home-made, tasty and good value. Crew were very competent and happy to engage with their passengers. Cruise departed right on time, very relaxing 2 hours and we got a senior's discount. Would not recommend if the weather is windy! But otherwise a very interesting taste... More
