We arrived and were lucky enough to have accommodation right on Wanganui River just before Cyclone Cook. The river was already quite high but with a couple of days of night rain, very convenient for us, it rose some more. A very pleasant walk is available around the river via two bridges. Such a pleasant experience for us to watch... More

After visiting NZ for more than 5 weeks now, I have see a lot of nice rivers, but there is something special here. A history, special energy or the unique nature? I don't know, but one should not miss it.

We went as far as the bridge to no where and this part of the river was beautiful and remote and clear with amazing reflections in the water unlike the dirty coloured water flowing through the city.

3 days canoeing down the Whanganui river surrounded by mist, towering cliffs and thick dense bush in an almost eerie quiet, interspersed with the sounds of birds and approaching rapids. This was an amazing way to experience an inaccessible part of New Zealand. No road access in the section of this mighty river for the 3 days we were on... More

Nice to go down (or up) by car, bike, jet boat or canoe (one section with a gorge is boat/canoe only - no road or track). Trips from 1 to 7 days. Campsites by the river, lodge near the Bridge to Nowhere.

My two friends and I rented a canoe and kayak for the three-day trip down the Whanganui from Whakahoro to Pipiriki. We stayed at the DOC Ōhauora campsite the first night and Ramanui Campground the second night. It was a fun trip, and one I'd recommend to others. A few things to know - - The river doesn't move swiftly... More

Stayed for one night near the river. The following morning I did a run on the river paths, across the bridges, thru the reserve, beautiful view as the sun was coming up and the river came to life. My husband did a walk on the town side of the river along the path. Good paths in any weather.

With 20 people in our group (aged 13-68) we paddled for 3 days from Whakahoro to Pipiriki, enjoying the stunning scenery along the way, mixed weather, interesting camp sites, many beautiful waterfalls, caves, rapids and people along the way, best thing of all was the organisation of the people at Taumaranui Canoe Hire, couldnt have done it without their advice... Spectacular natural scenery but driver would not be able to appreciate this as the river road is pretty treacherous. Washout, potholes, blind corners, single lane in parts. But there are places to stop and take in the view. Necessary and worth it if taking a jet boat trip up river to Bridge to Nowhere.
