Have been on the River Whanganui by jet boat to the Bridge to Nowhere several times with friends now. It's always a stunning trip. Must do it by canoe from Taramanui soon. Youreally feel that you are in the wilds of New Zealand 100 years ago. Fabulous.

I know this river from old and it used to be a place to avoid- but visited it this weekend and what a wonderful job they have done. People swimming, drinking coffee, enjoying the lovely walk afforded by the wide walkways. I did a lovely bike ride, had a very good coffee and was really impressed. Felt like a healthy,... More

A quiet place You can cruse up the river on a century old boat Or drive up the old river road to pipariki which is my favourite, A beautiful drive through country that hasnt changed in 50 years Or jump off a rope swing into the river at mosquitto point

My cousin and I camped next to the Wanganui River, oops I forget the h, never mind. Anyway we dropped a line in and after three hours and three minutes we didn't have a bite. Little dirty I think. Was hopping for an eel.

We travelled the river journey 5 day adventure - admittedly I was petrified the first day, getting used to the rapids and canoe - eventually got there and glad I accomplished this amazing adventure - glad I got fit prior - wish I had less fear than the teens - just amazing - recommend the 5 day adventure - the... If you are going to Whanganui instead of going over the ParaPara's why not take a trip beside the river along River Road. Visit the Historic places along the way, the Marae, that is open to visitors, Jerusalem, stopping at the Convent and beautiful old church that is still used today. There are also a couple of cafes along the... More

Definitely recommended, great scenery, doesn't require previous experience. 3 days is probably enough, although the longer 5 day trip may have more challenging rapids above Whakahoro. We went for a freedom hire of canoes and a kayak - canoes are probably a better option as long as you have an even number. There are 3 or 4 companies that provide... More

Now there is a choice of 3 steamboats to take you for a trip on the river! Great way to spend a sunny afternoon and soak up the local history. Make sure you have a look into the engine room and if you're lucky you might get to steer or blow the whistle. Nothing like a steam engine to make... More

We drove up the river on what can only be described as an expericience. The views of the river and the valley are outstanding. As for the road it is a bit narrow in places and care is required , hoping nothing comes the opposite way but all adds to the experience

Unique experience for visitors. Travel up the river on a genuine paddle steamer. Has a small cafe on board. Does day and evening trips
