Mt Manaia is one of a cluster of jagged, bush covered peaks towering 403 metres above sea level. There are some great information boards at the start of this walk. It begins with a lovely view south from the early settlers' memorial and continues into the bush at an easy grade. Then the steps begin, which continue almost continuously to the top. A wooden staircase leads to the highest point accessible to anyone without climbing gear or the remotest fear of heights. The views are two-fold. To one side of the pillar, north-east over Whangarei Harbour towards the city, while to the other there's a great view of Bream Head with the Hen and Chicken islands behind. But the best view of the lot comes, not from the summit, but from heading back down around 200m from the top where a clear but unmarked path heads left and, after just a minute or so, leads to a large, rock platform. From here, there's a spectacular uninterrupted view to the jagged hills of Mt Lion and the islands, as well as the best view of the summit's rock pillars. You must return the same way and expect the hike to take about 2 hrs. Medium fitness required, bring a water bottle and sturdy walking shoes recommended. Don't forget your camera and be sure to post pictures to this listing!

My partner and myself decided to walk this track to see the sunrise. Despite not seeing any photos of a sunrise from the top and not knowing whether or not there was even going to be a good sunrise we set off in the dark with headtorches. By the time we were half way up it started getting lighter. The... More

We did it in 1:30 hours up and 1 hour down. The up was pretty much just up but the track is superb and has numerous stairs and walkways to ensure a smooth walk. The view from the top is quite breathtaking from the rock platform at the summit. The trail up is through beautiful and varied forest. Your sun... More

Well worth the effort, if your from the south island then the climb won't hurt too much. Easy track surface and lots of stairs, over 1000 we were told. Make sure you go off track at a couple of spots to get some very a special views.

The Whangarei Heads have some lovely walks and this is one of the more spectacular. Over 100 steps in 1.5 km take you up through the bush to 430 and a rocky platform in amongst some amazingly big rocks. There are great views all round and the landscape of sea, beaches and hills is wonderful. There are also some great... More

Great climb up with lots and lots of steps! Definitely bring water as you might get really sweaty. We did this in 90 minutes (return). Pretty amazing views from the top!

A great climb up mostly formed staircases until you come out on top of the mountain. The views are amazing and a well earned rest can be taken while you enjoy the sights. The Mt Manaia walking club is at the beginning of the track and a nice spot to have an end of walk drink while looking out over... More

It's a lovely shaded bush walk up - 45 mins to 1 hour. And fabulous views from the top. Sneakers are fine for this - not jandals though. Definitely recommend it!

Take it easy if it is your first time, bring lots of water especially on a hot day, and enjoy the walk up

Throughly enjoyed our walk up Mount Mania this morning. The track has been improved since I last made the effort to do this great walk. We passed young and old, male, female, and children. Everyone had a smile. Made the top in 43 mins and we are not that fit. The view at the top is just out of this... More
