Mt Manaia is one of a cluster of jagged, bush covered peaks towering 403 metres above sea level. There are some great information boards at the start of this walk. It begins with a lovely view south from the early settlers' memorial and continues into the bush at an easy grade. Then the steps begin, which continue almost continuously to the top. A wooden staircase leads to the highest point accessible to anyone without climbing gear or the remotest fear of heights. The views are two-fold. To one side of the pillar, north-east over Whangarei Harbour towards the city, while to the other there's a great view of Bream Head with the Hen and Chicken islands behind. But the best view of the lot comes, not from the summit, but from heading back down around 200m from the top where a clear but unmarked path heads left and, after just a minute or so, leads to a large, rock platform. From here, there's a spectacular uninterrupted view to the jagged hills of Mt Lion and the islands, as well as the best view of the summit's rock pillars. You must return the same way and expect the hike to take about 2 hrs. Medium fitness required, bring a water bottle and sturdy walking shoes recommended. Don't forget your camera and be sure to post pictures to this listing!

Not too hard a climb....once you to the top the views are stunning! The track is quite good the whole way up and plenty of spots to stop for a breather ie - check out the view! The rainforest trees make you feel like you're in a tropical jungle!

Well worth the hour or so hike to summit, well maintained track with some great new stair features. With moderate fitness you should get up within an hour easily but it does feature some challenging stair climbs that could require a few rest stops for the unprepared.

Pretty cool walk, really good track! Takes about an hour to the top with a few stops along the way because there is a lot of stairs! Totally worth it though when you get to the top and see the most amazing view!

We decided to squeeze in a walk up Mt Manaia late in the day and made our way up to arrive at the top just before sunset. While we'd expected a steep climb, given the 1300 steps, the quality of the track meant this was less daunting than we had feared. The walk was very pleasant with a few good... More

The Mt.Manaia track is a must do for anyone who is interested in scenery. There are some very nice views along the way, not to mention those at the top. There are about 1100 steps in this track. Well worth the effort. Even those who are not fit would enjoy the very nice viewpoint a few metres from the car... More

We went up after a few weeks of binge eating and drinking through the xmas and new years break so it was a bit of a battle to start with but its not too strenuous. Just under an hour up so take it slow if you are unfit and you will get there easily.

I have moderate fitness and we got there. Took about an hour up and about 30 mins down. Very steep. View was worth it, panoramic views of the harbor.

Sunrise or sunset - an amazing sight to see and ever changing with the different lights. Climbing only for the very experienced, but many enjoyable walks from beginner level up can be taken in the surrounding area, all while enjoying views of this spectacular mountain.

Myself and my 4 girls aged 9 12 12 and 15 decided to climb Mt Manaia... I'm so glad we did really well maintained track, great information about how it was formed and about Kauri die back. I was so impressed with my girls we sped up the stairs and the view was utterly amazing. If you are reasonably fit... More
