About
Spectacular all year - see this area from the ground in the dry season, and from the air in the wet season. The Jim Jim Area is only accessible by 4WD during the dry season. Visitors can explore the spectacular and challenging walks or take a boat shuttle ride to Twin Falls over crystal clear waters (charges apply). Scenic flights are also very popular, and allow visitors to see the spectacular Jim Jim Falls, which are in full flow only during the wet season

Jim Jim Falls was quite an experience…… when we read the reviews we scoffed when the walk in was described as ‘challenging’.
With a 3 and 5 year old, there was blood, sweat and tears. It was extremely difficult with small children in the heat of the day. I would not recommend. It’s definitely ok for a fit adult, but the sheer size of the rocks to climb over for a distance of 500m is a little too much for little legs. This is one for early morning if you take children in.
There is also very little to no shade in the middle of the day at the actual plunge pool (or beach area).
A suitable car for the last 6kms is recommended. Something with a little clearance. In oct there were still a few small creek crossings.

Fair bit of a walk (about 1 hour/45 min if your are quick) one way. Bouldering most of the way (again, man with crutches did it too, he was very determined, good on him). Little kids too, even though you think it is a bit tough here and there. Kids are more flexible anyway. Once you are there you will understand the "beach pool" name!!!! LOVELY. Signs of crocs everywhere, but there weren't any. We only believed it after enough people in the water before us... The plunge pool up the top is a MUST DO. Definitely NO crocs there (is my personal belief ... don't trust it), a bit cold the water, but great swim, even all the way up to the steep wall of 150 metres high. AMAZING.

I'm turn about what score to give this experience. The waterhole and falls are spectacular but it's challenge to get there....particularly if you are in an older age bracket. I made it, struggling over the boulders and with help but to be honest, if I'd known how hard it was going to be - and that there would be other equally beautiful waterholes that were more easy to access, I wouldn't have bothered. it took me nearly 2 hours to travel the 1 km into the falls,
However, for those of you who are young and fit, go for it!

Self drove from Cooinda.
50km dirt track which wasn’t too bad, followed by 5km 4wd only track.
The walk from the car park to the falls...was hard. We had our 10 year old with us and it was rough going. Took about an hour to get in, 45 minutes to get out.
BUT
Worth it for the absolutely phenomenal beach and plunge pool at the end, although the water was freezing.
The waterfall will only run in the wet so don’t be disappointed if it’s not flowing in the dry.
An absolutely magical spot.
Do not go if you don’t have a 4wd, or fit and agile.

Make sure you leave earlier for the trip- takes about 2 hours to get there. The 1km walk in is over a lot of boulders/rocks. It is also a bit slippery in the Sandy parts.
The view at the end was well worth it. The swim was cold and under the falls, even colder. Carrying in a noodle as a floatie was a great idea.
We stopped at the campgrounds for a picnic lunch on the way out- great facilities again.

Unfortunately it wasn't flowing when I was there this time but regardless it's still a beautiful spot.
Plenty of sand to relax and chill out.
The drive in is rather easy, yes there's some corrugation but it's not that bad if you have done off road driving.
The walk in can be tough if you're struggling with disabilities as you do need to climb over a number of big rocks.

We throughly enjoyed our 4x4 trip to jim jim falls with Chizo. The drive to the car park was very interesting with wildlife and information. The walk to the pool involves climbing over rocks but is well worth it. The pool and plunge pool are stunning. We so enjoyed our day, lunch was lovely, Chizo was a great guide. Thank you so much for a lovely day.

We self drive to Jim Jim falls and walked to the plunge pools. We are in our 60s. We drove from Jabiru at 9 am and got to the pool at 12, so keep in mind this takes a long time to get there. The 50 km of dirt road to get to the camp is easy and not too bumpy. Then the 5 km of 4wd track is not that difficult either, just take it slow, but you should have a 4wd with high clearance although we saw a Rav 4 doing it and they looked ok. The walking to the pool is rated medium to difficult. The difficult part is walking over boulders, we struggled a bit as our balance is not so sharp. The track is not well indicated at times. If you have kids, consider going to the beach (shallow waters) rather than the plunge pool which is colder. We also brought a rush vest which made it easier to get into the water as it is freezing at first, bring some goggles too to see all the fish. The site is magical and nothing can describe it until you are there. Unfortunately no water coming done but still magical

The walk up Jim Jim falls is not an easy one, but it is well worth it.
The swim in the plunge pool definitely cools you off at the end of your journey after a hard walk.
The view to the cliffs above is the biggest you will ever see.
The first half of the walk is easy going, but as you get closer, the rocks get larger and harder to scramble over. Some of them are almost as big as a house.
It is only accessible in the dry season as you will see why, once you arrive at your destination.
We had plenty of time in Kakadu, but if you short on time, I recommend you take one of the tours that incorporates both Twin and Jim Jim falls for the day.
During the wet, you can only take a flight over the falls as the amount of water plunging of the falls is immense to say the least.

I know that every brochure and shiny thing you've looked at regarding what to do in Kakadu spruiks Jim Jim and Twin Falls as THE MUST DO THINGS IN KAKADU!! - but, and you can trust me on this as I have spent at least half of the last 4 years in Kakadu - they are not the best things at all.
Don't get me wrong, they are still beautiful and the walks into them are challenginig and lovely at the same time - it's just that Jim Jim does not flow for most of the season (it becomes Jim Jim Fell instead....) and the water you swim in gets quite stagnant.
So what I'm trying to say is, don't be disappointed if you don't get to go here on your visit - places like Maguk, and Gunlom are much better, Moline is one of the nicest swimming spots in the park and there are other more secluded spots to be amazed by too - maybe I'll tell you about them later.......

We are going in about a months time, will this still be a good time to travel there, and would we be able to swim in most of the falls?
Written August 11, 2016
Kakadu is very civilised and they bend over backward to cater to the tourist. We went for 3 days and stayed 8...and could have stayed a month. You can see a lot with a standard car, and yes absolute access. The road are excellent. A4X4 will give access to a few more areas but in two days no need. In the Darwin info centre buy your pass and pick up the brochure for what the pass covers. The talks and tours are amazing and free. I must recommend the Animal Track Safari, the Yellow River, the art gallery up in Ubirr and at Nourlangie. It is like any other National Park just owned by our indigenous and therefore much more care is taken of the environment. Its stunning!

We will be staying in Cooinda and originally thought we would take a day trip with Top End Explorers to the falls, but their website says they are not taking any new bookings for 2016. Anyone have any suggestions for a good outfitter to the falls- picking up from Coinda?

Heading to Kakadu on 11-17 April. What tracks and attractions, campsites are open then?

Hi John,
I don't have a 4WD, how do u propose I do the 4 hour drive?
Written January 21, 2016
No need for a 4X4, you can see so much without it. A really good guide is any Info centre in the Top End. It cost about $40.00 per Adult to get in. It worth EVERY cent. It cover free talks and tours by very experienced people both indigenous and non indigenous.
