Discovery Bay near Albany is a truly unique attraction.

It is home to Australia's last operating Whaling Station, a stunning Botanic Garden of Australian plants and a display offering visitors a close up experience with friendly Australian Wildlife.

You can choose to explore either our whaling history, or the gardens and wildlife, or the entire site to make a real day of it! Pack a picnic or BBQ lunch and spend a day discovering lots you didn't know about the Great Southern region.

Situated at the tip of the Flinders Peninsula, the heritage-listed "Whale World" site has undergone dramatic change since 2004. Now maximising its location, Discovery Bay is a showcase of amazing regional bio-diversity, yet still remains true to the original whaling display.

Historic Whaling Station guided tours are included with admission, while informative displays are provided to enjoy the gardens and wildlife at your own pace.

Only regret is we missed so much that Albany had to offer due to predetermined travel commitments. Next trip will allow 3-5 days stay in this area

Hi Cecilia Unfortunately, we hear this regret more times than we like to. Certainly the marketing of Albany and the Great Southern Region needs to be better to promote to people before they are here just how many varied activities are available to visitors. This has started, so hopefully in years to come we don't see people with similar frustrations... More

Really interesting Whaling station museum. I actually found the museum quite sad and the stories were quite gruesome but it's part of the areas history and was very interesting to find out more! Great tour guides! The ship was fantastic and the whale skeletons were really cool! A must see if in the area!

This park is so well maintained and very interesting but I found the tour guide informative but unnecessary as there was voice overs for each section.

Hello Michelle Thank you for your review. We have two audio presentations on site, firstly aboard the Cheynes IV whale chaser and then a second one activated by our guides in the lower processing factory. This is included within the tour, and so can't be experienced by people taking themselves around the station. I'm sorry that you found the audios... More

Costing $29 per person for entry to the whaling station, I thought it was expensive at first, but I was very happy to have done it and thought it was very worthwhile. Whaling was such a huge part of Albany's history, it really is a must do. For an extra $10 per person (total $39), you can add Botanic Garden... More

Hi Sue Thank you for taking the time to review your visit, and for your lovely comments. It sounds like you are describing our Tour Guide James, the youngest in our team and fairly new to guiding himself. It is fabulous feedback that I will make sure I pass on to him, as it is not an easy tour to... More

Great learning experience. Brilliant food and drinks. A really lovely place to visit, spent hours walking around the Whale museums, botanical gardens and Wildlife park. Highly recommend a visit here.

We were in two minds before we visited this attraction, but from reviews on WikiCamps, decided to go for it. The history from this Whaling Station is far beyond interesting and informative, and the tour guide we had (which runs free, every hour) was very knowledgeable and could answer every question we fired at him. I would reccomend this attraction... More

We came to visit the whaling museum but did not take in any of the other attractions. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it - sure it has a grisly history and whilst I don't enjoy the thought of any animal being killed, I put this to the back of my mind and enjoyed how informative it... Hi Nin and Andrew Thank you for posting an honest account of your visit. We hear often from people who find the history of killing whales too distressing, so it is good to hear from visitors who felt this way but still enjoyed the chance to look around the museum. It is a shame you missed a tour as they... More

I was visiting with my 19 year old daughter and have previously visited whale world twice before with relatives. She enjoyed whale world and the walk around the boardwalk was quite enjoyable but the conditions that the animals were kept in was very disappointing. We had previously visited Caversham wildlife park and Perth zoo which have very large spaces for... More

Despite Discovery Bay being about whaling- as an animal lover I was a little hesitant about going- I found this really interesting. Take the free tour that operates regularly. It is well worth the time as the guide can fill you in on interesting facts about the station. Then head off to explore on your own. Was really interesting to... More

Hello Wow, thank you for such an honest review. We often talk to people reluctant to learn about the site's history, who are still pleased that they took the time to enter and join a guided tour. It is a gruesome past, but as you say it is part of our history and we believe it is an important story... More

Seems the whole message is about the glory days of whaling and subsequent economic loss without emphasising the environmental catastrophe that it brought. Needs to rewrite the 1980s script and refocus to the environmental and ethical benefits of the station's closure. Also pricey for what it is.
