Häme Castle is one of Finland's medieval royal castles. It is believed to have been built at the end of the 13th century, following the crusade by Swedish Earl Birger to Häme region. During the Middle Ages the original fortified camp was built into a residential castle for its commandant. In the 18th century a third storey was built and curtain wall buildings partly replaced the original outer walls. The castle and its surroundings were in prison use from 1837 to 1972. The main castle is now presented as a historical monument. The Häme Castle and its redbrick barracks are on the shore of Lake Vanajavesi. The promontary has been a meeting place for centuries, and the walls almost echo the voices from the Middle Ages.

Häme Castle offered really nice surroundings for a wedding. As a bonus parts of the castle were open during the evening so that guests (especially kids) could wander around and have a real adventure.

Visited the castle during a national autumn vacation with children. Plenty of people, but no special seasonal program for visitors?! Even the cafeteria was closed! When do the Finns realize that there are families travelling also in Finland during this vacation period? The biggest problem was to find the place. From Tampere, entering Hämeenlinna we didn't find any boards or... More

Unfortunately the place has been a prison in the past and also many other events have affected to its authenticity. But still it is interesting experience to see a glimpse of Finnish history. They also had some special things for kids in some rooms, so if the walls are not enough, you can enjoy playing with Playmobils or trying to... More

First problem, the town needs some signs to make it easier to find this castle. Second problem, no coffee shop. Third problem, the castle is barren. Not a Baron's Castle, it is just mostly empty (unless you pay extra for the Heavy Metal exhibition). There is a lot of info on the reconstruction and plenty of empty rooms. For me,... More

We really enjoyed our visit here, also a lot of good experiences for kids. Nice selection of plate armor, beautiful landscape around the castle, good toilet facilities (also for small kids) and good cafeteria. We really appreciated the room where kids(and adults) could try on plate armor :) We half expected our two year old son to be bored halfway... More

This is Top 3/Top 5 Castle in Finland. Beautiful location next to lake and with comfy shoes you can easily walk here from City Centre. Free parking and you also can walk free around this area. If you wanna go inside the Castle, entrance is 9€ or 15€ you wanna their "Heavy Metal" armour collection. They also have restaurant and... More

I visited on a day trip from a large scout camp at Evo. It was a novelty using flushing toilets and a decent hot meal with fresh salad so definitely recommend the restaurant. It was a slightly disappointing that the armoury collection wasn't Finnish but interesting none the less.

You can also walk around there and feel atmosphere with no cost. Also you can buy a ticket and go see it from inside. Anyway, its interesting old castle in really good shape.

This castle was mainly the reason for my whole visit to the city of Hämeenlinna, and it was definitely worth it. It's a bit of a walk from the railway station/city centre, but still very doable (about 25 minutes or so from the station). In the summer of 2016 they have an armour exhibition called Heavy Metal at the castle,... More
