Perurail stops here. So do tourist buses. The view is good. There is a small but bustling craft market, ladies wanting you to take photos of them and their alpacas for a few sols, and an interesting church. For some reason, the church is dedicated to Our Lord of the Cane, but one thing you won't see here is sugarcane.

Visited this church as part of the Andean Explorer train trip from Puno to Cusco. Getting dark so hard to see much but the stark remoteness can not be under estimated. So pleased we stopped and hope it can carry on

This is the border of Cusco and Puno with an altitude of 14 thousand feet. Our tour bus stopped over here to let us use the public restrooms here. Be prepared to have one sol ready in order to use the toilets. As expected, there are natives selling souvenirs here. If shopping is not your thing, you can enjoy the great view here with snow-capped mountains in the distance.

This is a must see on the road from Cuzco to Puno. It's the highest point, altitude 4335m, & most coach / bus tours stop here briefly. Beautiful views of snow capped mountain. Andean vendors selling local crafts.

We travelled by road from Cusco to Puno by private mini bus and the road takes you over this pass which at 4336 metres can get quite chilly and windy. The road journey between the two towns is is quite long and stopping at the pass was a welcome break to stretch our legs. As we stopped the train between the two towns pulled up at the station below the pass which took me back many years when I did the train journey. There is a small market where the sellers are young girls dressed in their colourful clothes. It is worth the visit.

Basically Raya Pass is the highest point en route from Puno (Titikaka lake) to Cusco and nothing more...
One may call it a scenic stop but actually the whole lanscape around looks pretty much the same.
No dramatic blocks of rock hanging over courageous voyagers, no breathtaking abysses, no mountains of epic proportions ;-) . A wide, arid valley reaching its summit at 4,335 m above sea level. A great number to mention while in lowlands :-).
See my photos.

situated on the andes mountains at 4310 mt over sea level, this mountain pass offers you a wonderful view of the background your travel through. there is the chance to buy some souvenirs from the many old women on the pass

La Raya Pass (located 14,100 feet / 4,300 meters above sea level) is known for its lovely picturesque sloping hillsides, purple peaks and calm freshwater pools. There are quite a few vendors selling many alpaca's hand produced items.

We stopped for a photo op on our way to Puno. Had a nice view of the mountains and some shopping if you are ok with lots of people trying to get the same picture all around you. It was a good area to stretch your legs after the bus ride. We were told the shopping was cheaper in Puno and not to shop there

Regarding altitude, this is the highest point of the road from Cusco to Puno over the High Andes. Nothing really here except a place to stop and take that essential photo of yourselves by the elevation marker at over 4300 meters up...!!
It is quite peaceful up here too, just don't try to rush around as the air is thin. Take your time as we did and no problems. Some nice views of the mountains from here too.

If I'm already in Puno and not on a bus tour, how long would it take me to get to La Raya Pass? Would I be able to hire a car to get there?
Written June 13, 2017
I agree, it's about 3 to 3:30 hours from Puno. I wouldn't make a special trip to see it though. It is half way between Cuzco and Puno.

Grazie in anticipo! Vale
Written March 6, 2016
credo di no, è una sosta per fare foto e godersi il panorama. ma i servizi privati possono essere usati anche solo per lo spostamento, senza pranzi e hotel

Can you stop on this pass on way from Juliana airport either to Puno ,Peru or from Puno to airport
